U.S. beats Iran
« on: December 02, 2022, 02:10:00 PM »
I loathe Soccer but the fact the U.S. of A. beat the Iran team actually makes me happy.
Now I hope the lose the final so we do not hear a load of bollocks about Soccer.

I don't know anything about it, and it bores me. My oldest boy was an all star 45 years ago and played in the  Cotton Bowl in Dallas. I never liked the game.

It's as thrilling as watching grass grow in my opinion. My oldest great grand daughter started playing when she was six and we went to watch. It was hilarious watching two gals trying to keep a bunch of six year olds corralled and focused. Little kids running around kicking the ball any direction they could with no interest except kicking it before someone else could. She lasted that summer and I was glad that was all.

Soccer is boring, unlike American football, which is more complicated.  Soccer became popular in 3rd world countries because it only required a ball to play.  Other sports required more tools and equipment.

Baseball required a bat, ball, and gloves for everyone playing.

Football required a ball, helmet, pads, shoes, and uniforms with numbers.

Basketball also became popular in 3rd world countries due to only having to have a ball and a basket or hoop of some sort.

Swimming never took off in 3rd world countries as some didn't have pools, enough water, or safe water to swim in.

Boring is way subjective. If you are bored, you are bored.  I don’t watch soccer but I can sit and watch a 5k or 10K foot race on a track and enjoy every minute.. Baseball…..nine innings of slow. Football…..each play is five or ten seconds of action followed by a period of retoolingm0

I always thought soccer was not a sport due to it being a non contact game. I was wrong. I played a few years both indoor and outdoor on an open men’s league and it is sometimes a contact sport and a lot tougher then I thought. I’ve participated in a lot of sports and never cared about the entertainment factor for bench riders... I do realize that spectators help to fund the sports.

What is the problem with soccer?

Nothing really I assume, other than soccer, football, basketball and baseball etc.  occupy a place on my shelf,
along side pet rocks, fidgets and just below the Northern lights..

Now I have watched Cricket, when sports channels were not same crap, different pile.

As Baseball is loosely based on Cricket, it is a like baseball slow no contact unless the Bowler hits the Batsman, while soccer (and hockey) is just a bunch of dude running (skating) back and forth , back and forth ; I have not watched a hockey game in almost 40 years.

At that I still find Bowling, on TV, interesting, IF, it is shown, not often any more.

There are a LOT of sports, although Europe has more little known ones than the U.S. , that are being shoved aside by the push for soccer and basketball; Jim Brown one of the best ever Football players is also condsidered probably the best ever Lacrosse player.

One of the odd things, softball, the only Pro (play for money) in fastpitch is women's, men's , if it still exists, is slow-pitch BUT  one good , VERY GOOD , reason for disliking soccer, in 2005 a secret ballot was taken by the Olympic committee to drop softball and baseball from the Olympics.

JMHO-  they should drop all "sports "
that they likely wouldn't have had in
ancient Greece.
Baseball, football, "football ", basketball,
Skiing, ice skating, hockey, etc.
Most anything that requires some kind
of accessories besides a fit human
body. They've been shooting bows and
lifting heavy weights for centuries, so
those would stay
All the rest are "games " to fill out
the program and allow commercial
enterprise to get their piece of the
pie ,and to allow different countries
to take a share of medals
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Oh, come on now, Bob. There is footwork, passing, and ball handling in soccer, skating skills, stick work and passing the puck in hockey.
Ever watch the Irish sport of Hurling?

I understand the thoughts here and don’t care as I’ve been guilty of the same... I stepped on the Mat once in a open tournament and chuckled at a multiple national champion who was my opponent, Then my nose was run up and down the mat for 3 periods. It’s easy to judge sports and matches from the sidelines.

Doesn't make any difference that soccer (fooseball) is the traditional European game?  It makes a difference whether a game has been played since childhood.
For example..I would like to see all of Europe and UK, dig up an American style professional (NFL) football team,
and challenge the best America can offer.  Although I couldn't care less about pro sports, that game I may watch,
just for curiosity's sake.  Same goes for basketball..

I am not denigrating the Euros, just pointing out the difference familiarity and practice makes...

Same as a Netherlands mountain climbing team may find it difficult to practice at home... ;D ;D ;D

I like watching curling in the winter Olympics.  What other sport can a middle age person win gold?

Hurling is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology.

That game looks a great deal like Lacrosse, a native American game.  I understand the Iroquois still play the
   game on their reservations.
When my youngest  brother coached Lacrosse at Geneseo U., he brought the team up from the basement, to
  #4 in small colleges.
   Here's a few minutes of Lacrosse;

IIRC the whole thing was supposed to
be emulating the ancient Greek games.
It's funny semi amusing/sad tragic how
adulterated things get over the years.
Probably the worst is allowing professional
players to participate in what's supposed
to be a strictly amateur event

They once had far more hunting and fishing shows on mainline TV, like "The Wide World of Sports".  Curt Gowdy had some hunting shows where they showed the rifle and caliber and what game they were hunting.  Guns are "bad" today, as well as eating meat.

there's a good many that don't think far
enough ahead that just by existing they
throw off lots of carbon dioxide just
breathing normally, and pollute the
atmosphere daily with their own body waste.
and the plant life they insist on eating
exclusively can't grow and thrive without
carbon dioxide.
same for the animals they want saved and
don't eat.

woops. . . . .
