Has he posted recently and I haven't caught it ?  ..Or is he perhaps on another deployment?

I believe TN indicated he was mustering out of the service, and possibly moving to Texas.
I didn't get the feeling that he intended to be a regular here.

Hope to hear from him soon..  Perhaps he figures there is some place in Texas could use a capable, and experienced pastor.

..Here's wishing him the best, in any case.

I could be wrong on his intentions concerning GBO. I just got the sense he had other plans.
He was aware of Texas politics, and I think he may have mentioned moving to, or back, to Texas.

If I recall, he is living in Alaska as his retirement home.
His last posts were pictures of his Sitka Blacktails.

Hey everybody, Pete checked in on me and said I should probably stop by. I’m still in RI, those were teeny Jamestown deer! I am retiring, just waiting on the actual orders, but on track to move to Alaska in April where I have been called to pastor a church. It’s a tough season on our military, for all kinds of reasons, and my wife and I are often overwhelmed with stress, plus the whole prospect of retiring, moving, and learning to thrive in a remote part of Alaska. My MIL is also in stage 4 blood cancer which adds. But God is good, our kids are well married, walking with Jesus, stable, and we’re all healthy.

I wish everyone here a Merry Christmas!

Well, I was wrong on relocation, right on retirement. 50-50 split?
If I was young again, I think I'd shoot for Montana, or Wyoming. Maybe Idaho.

Looked at all 3 - even had a trip planned to Wyoming, and looked hard at property. Then God brought the church on the Kenai across our path, just a few hours from the grand boys - unanimous vote by the members, I dropped my retirement papers the next day. Its going to be some hard living, about as hard as we've ever lived, and a whole lot colder. I'm only 53 ... I can give them lots of years still.

Can't handle the altitude or the constant
severe cold, so I'll have to stay in this
region or a similar climate.
47 F here right now, and I'm covered up
with a comforter and a polypro watchcap
and the heater just got through cycling.
Years ago I was determined to move to
Alaska and build a homestead cabin, etc.
etc. etc.
There's no way I could hack it in that
frigid climate. Tried to bowhunt the
southern rockies some years back, and
the 10,000'  lack of air convinced me
of where I needed to be
Good luck to those more hardy than
myself
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

That's why I sold out at 70. I got family here in west Texas.  I don't blame ya.

So pleased to hear from you, TN!   That call to AK obviously means God is not done with you yet..congrats !

So far as the extremes in low temperatures, you should not see them in the Kenai to the degree they would be in the interior.. e.g. Fairbanks, since the Japanese trade winds moderate the south coastal areas.

Here's wishing you the best in your new assignment...and prayers sent up for your Mother-in-law...

Will you be pastor the the interesting church built by the Russian Othodox?

You will be in a climate similar to Northern Minnesota, dress warm in winter, and watch for skeets in summer.
Godspeed and Merry Christmas.

While there is a town on the peninsula named Kenai..and at first I thought that  was what he may have been talking about,
then when he said 'the' Kenai, it brought to mind the whole Kenai, which is actually an entire peninsula.

Haha, not Russian Orthodox, although that is common on the Kenai. I've been called to a conservative Baptist church.

If you google Cooper Landing, you'll find a teeny blip at the juncture of the glacier fed Kenai Lake and the Kenai River, tucked down into a valley. If you find the bridge there, just on the lakeside of the southern foot of the bridge, there's a log cabin church that pre-dates statehood. Winters are very tough, 4 months of summer are paradise so they explode from 400 year round residents to several thousand each May. They've had a whole lot of snow this winter, power out a bunch, slides blocking the only way in/out/through the area, avalanches, one room school flooded ... not the toughest place we've lived, but by far the coldest! When our daughter and husband left the Coast Guard, they stayed in AK ... son in law is a 3rd generation alaska sled neck, now a cop in Homer. We'll be just a couple of hours away from them, and our grand boys; we'll even shop at the same grocery stores because there's only a few big ones on the peninsula, and they're all in Soldotna/Kenai.

I attached a picture of the view off the front deck of the parsonage ... not sure if it came through, but a whole lotta snow, great big mountain, and some moose in the yard.

...And yes, thank you for your long, dedicated service..

Living "outside" i cannot understand all of it, but i have a serious chunk of my family who do or have lived in
      AK...
It seems that everyone who goes there to live, learns to love the place...  I cannot explain it..and they rtarely do.

I'm guessing there is a sense of living a bit more 'free' there.

Well teamNelson, by Alaska standards your not in a remote area. You have a road in, access to a airport, and water travel routes.

But your in one of my favorite areas in the USA. Hope you enjoy the blessing God gave you.  ;D
