..The Jamestown well..
« on: December 18, 2021, 09:22:29 AM »
.
A bit of info that some don't have..  Jamestown (VA) was founded in 1607, some 13 years before the Pilgrims set foot on Cape Cod..  To frame this video, I must mention a phrase I heard one "historian" say.  His specialty seemed to be arms and armor, and he was speaking of finds in that field.

He claimed that for "some strange reason,.the large majority of finds in swords and other arms, seem to come from the bottom of lakes and rivers."
Well..imagine that!  I could have screamed.."Hey pal, if somebody drops their sword or helmet in forest or field, he will pick it up again..but if he drops it in a lake or river, that is a bit more of a recovery problem..."

In recent years, archaeologists involved in the Jamestown settlement found the original well, and recovered what was dropped in this well which is over 400 years old.

These are exciting finds..at least in my view.. See what they found in the bottom.. (3 min video)

Other Jamestown artifacts, if you are interested...  (12 min video)

We did.
Nancy and I enjoy history.

And, she recently took the pledge for the DAR.
She worked on that for years.

Congrats to Nancy...that is not easy to do!  Who was her main tie to the revolution?  Does she understand where and how he served?
It is one thing to know you have roots there..quite another to PROVE it to the satisfaction of the DAR !  They are very strenuous with their requirements.

I’ll have to give his name later, Nancy is playing games with kinfolk right now so I won’t disturb her.
We’re doing the annual King get together right now.

But yes, she knows the battles, his rank, regiment, and when he mustered out.
Plus, she has one on her mother’s side so she’ll be a double whammy. :)

That is interesting stuff..  I had one for sure in the Revolutionary War along with other 'possibles'.. He was shot through the neck at Quebec, but lived out his natural life after the war.  Must have been little more than a 'flesh wound'..
Had some in the very early wars , such as Prince Phillip's war....  But here's the rub..one can know..through family genealogy, books etc...but to PROVE it to the DAR or SoAR..is another task..

That must make it doubly interesting to you mcbammer, as almost assuredly he did drink from that well !!

I find history to be very spellbinding, since it has so much to teach us..  Just think how much misery it would save mankind, were they to learn history.

At this moment, we have savages running our streets and governments, calling for a rebirth of Marxism.
If they had been taught the truth about this devil's design, surely they would find better things to do.

Interesting. Makes one wonder how such things ended up in the bottom of a well. Like the muzzle loading pistol, and what was the the thing with the curved blade on the pole, and what looked like a sickle blade on the end?  Was that some sort of weapon?

IG, Nancy’s second tie to 1776 is named Slaughter.
She’ll be going to the national archives soon, we live about a mile from it.

Another item from the Jamestown well.  This is a baby "teething whistle".  From what I understand, it is a little silver & coral whistle was given to babies who were teething.

Being made of metal, I would be slow to hand this to a teething baby..especially one that is tottering around, just starting to walk.  They often stumble..

Maybe the whistle was for momma to blow to drown out the squalling. :)

That is an old weapon, called a 'halberd' !  They are today, still carried (ceremonially) by the Swiss Guard at the Vatican.
Historically, thay have accounted for many casualties..obviously a swordsman would have to get past that blade
or axe, before endangering the one who weilds the Halberd, plus it must have presented a challenge to the mounted horseman..
  Here are some halberd tactics;

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGNPoInu-Ds

Notice, the halberd can pull as well as to thrust...an extra challenge to the horseman.  An armored knight on th eground, has a new set of problems..

That’s a wicked looking weapon.
I think I’d rather be shot than worked over with that thing.:)
