What are the true figures for muzzle velocity?  I want to get a Tempest in .22 caliber.  Several sites list the muzzle velocity at 400fps.  Others list it at 330fps.  I know the British version is restricted to 330fps but are all export models to the U.S. changed in some way to increase the velocity up to 400fps?

Webley Velocitys

Well yes and no. The 177 Wableys(Tempest & Hurricane) Will do aprox 400fps sometimes 420 - 430 fps. However in 22 caliber 330 fps is more likely. You see they make no changes to the gun except to change the caliber of barrel so you have the same spring pushing the lighter 177 pellets as push the heaver 22 caliber pellets. Thus the lower velocity in the larger caliber. Unfortunelately the Webley design has been taken as far as it can go. Tuning may make it a bit smoother but will gain you no more power. Even double springs have been tried(a smaller one inside of the larger) and no appricable gain in power shower over the chrony, it just made the gun noticeably harder to cock. With these limitations the Webleys are usually best in 177 if you want the most power in the gun.
Sorry I couldnt be more help but the Webleya are some of the most fun airpistols out there.

holyokster,
I used to live in Burlington, about as flat as you can get, used to drive through Holyoke to go to Sterling. Just thought it was kinda cool to see activity from that area. I'll bet you could do some good varmint hunting out there. Anyway I never get back to CO anymore, been in TX for so long I need more O2 than you guys have. The older I get the more I need. Less oxygen=more snow.
Later,

I have an older .177 Tempest that always gets 475fps for the first shot, then a steady 450fps for the rest.  Must burn some built-up lube on that first one.  Anyway, I installed a used .22 barrel assembly and it only clocked around 320fps with Hobby pellets.

It really shouldn't matter. The gun is a piece of junk.

I have to strongly disagree with that comment

The webleys have been around in one form or another since 1923 si if it was junk somebody would have figured it out by now. What it is through is a spring powered pistol which requires a lot of practice to master. You don't just pick it up and start shooting 1/4 inch groups! The gun is dead strong and the differing models last for a real long time. MY personal Hurricane is about 20 years old and functions as a new gun. So to conclude just becouse you can shoot a pistol does not make it junk. It just means YOU need more practice shooting spring powered air pistols perhaps pumps or CO2 would be a better gun for you if you don't want to put in the practise necessary to master the Webley.

Deaf Smith,
I agree.  I've had my Tempest in .177 for about 3 months.  Some days I can shoot great and other days I'm all over the target.  I blame the pellets, but I know it's just me getting used to the gun.
