First pic is from the back of a float plane between Cecil and the Harding Ice Field. Second was taken on a hike/bear hunt up Slaughter Ridge looking back at Cecil, back in May. Our house is a speck in the lower right area.

My wife starts her new job at our little school today - 18 kids, K-12! I walked her there, about a mile, then swung by the post office to get our mail, then over to the church to take a current photo. Not 50 yards in the background is the lake; lots of folks out fishing today. Sockeye  are nearly dead, literally, so you can get a photo with the bright red body and green turned up jaw before you toss it back in. Silvers and pinks are in, along with trout and daly varden. Walked home but about to walk back over to pick my wife up so we can walk to the polls!

Hah, a little, but not near so much as we've had moving to blue check states or overseas. In most ways its been like going home, especially after the last 3 years of duty. The best place to be is in the center of God's will.

Once you figure out that there's no safety net here, its not hard to live. Lots of folks never figure that out, and they die or leave ... mostly leave. But the thing is, if you come in with the right attitude and go down swinging, the community will make sure you get back up. While our church is pretty small, the whole community is excited to have a full time year round pastor. They've not had one of those in a very long time. Tough people still need someone to talk to when the problem can't be fixed with your hands or sheer will. So we jumped into the community, do the things locals do the local way, whether its work or play, and they've accepted us. Winter will be hard, but we're not scared.

I mean, imagine a culture of god-fearing, gun toting, self-sufficient conservatives with a just a dash of libertarianism, who work hard, fish, hunt, laugh, and eat ice cream a lot, and take care of each other. Not too hard to adjust to that.

Power is out for the second time today, which is not unusual. Unfortunately means the well pump is off.

Sump basement pump would be my worry, you can use that water to flush the toidee and run through your berkey. Sleepless nights...

If there's a sump pump in this house, I've not found it, and I've even been inside the walls. I've got a few aquatainers filled up for drinking, and a couple of buckets to haul from the creek that runs along our property line down to the river, to feed the Berkley or flush the toidee.

Didn't miss the lights, although I think I'm going to put emergency bulbs in the bathrooms - it was dark. Really didn't miss the internet. Read a book, watched the storm trace along over the river, while everyone else napped.

Over all the years I lived in Alaska, I saw a LOT of people come and go...

Most were just following the money!

If you're following money, it won't take you up here right now. Maybe to the slope, but not like it used to be.

Lots of folks that came up with us said they were hoping to stay for the winter; I don't think its unfair to say not many will actually do it. I'm planning some stuff for the community over winter, wondering how many to plan for.

If I were younger (a lot younger) Wyoming might be my pick knowing what I know now. Friend of mine after a divorce moved up to Casper many years ago, and loves it.

Truly wish I and mine were part of that community...

That's a great place, and I'd have been happy if that's where God has called us.

I never followed the money, I went there and stayed 25 years, through the good times and bad...

But, most I saw coming and going WERE following the money, they came during the good times and left when the money left.
