my P229 is dead!
« on: May 22, 2003, 01:10:57 PM »
:(  5 rounds into my mag, it froze up tight. I must have busted something internal. I was shooting S&B 140 gr. 357 factory ammo.

My dealer was pretty cool about it. (Ive bought 4 handguns from him including this one.) He said he would get a hold of Sig for me and take care of it.

He called me at the office today, and informed me that the Sig rep had a purchase or sent to him for the gun back already. They want to see if the barrel was bulged, from a round being stuck in it?

Apperently, S&B ammo has had problems with the 357 sig round. They are either over powered or under powered. The later seems to be the problem. The bullet gets stuck in the barrel and the follow up shot, bulges the barrel, freezing the action. I was informed S&B pays for all repairs and or replacement. (this problem is only in their .357 sig ammo)

This is not to say S&B is not good ammo, I myself have shot a butt load of this stuff through all of my weapons and never had a problem and the rounds performance has always been A+.

This situation realy sucks for me because the gun is not even a month old yet, with exactly 105 rounds shot through it!

Has anyone had anything like this happen to them before? Or knew of possible issues with S&B 357 sig rounds? I have 10 boxes of 50 of this stuff! Do I toss it out, (all sales on factory ammo is final, no exchanges)
Do I shoot through these rounds, was it a combo of bad gun+ bad ammo?

lets hear your thoughs

I say shoot it but pay attention for a weak round and if it even seems suspect check the barrel.

Texas DPS might be a source of information on this. The Sig 357 is the official issue for all the Troopers in Texas.
With that many Sig 357's out there I am sure is this is a real problem, a recall might be appropriate.
My aim is to hit what I am shooting at!

S&B Ammo

If it were me, I would contact S&B by phone and tell them I want my money back and then buy another brand of ammo. With the second guy writing and saying he had a friend that it happened to I would not take a chance with that ammo.

I think GP hit the nail on the head.  When you buy "cheap", you get cheap.  I had several problems with the S&B in 6.5x55.  I'll just pay a few buck more and ensure I get a quality product theat won't screw my guns up.

Like my old grandpa use to say, "Boy, you get what you pay for!"

Same thing happened to me with S&B in my 229.Locked up tight.I noticed the recoil rod was sticking out a bit and I pushed it back in but could not pull the slide back but was able to push the slide forward. It then fired.Tore it down and the only thing I found was a small gouge on the frame rail.Smoothed it out with emery cloth.Put 100 rounds of GOOD ammo thru it yesterday and was perfect. It was the last round.I did not notice a low are excessive load in it.I wish I had looked for the bad shell. Any way the S&B went in the trash.S&B has always worked fine in my 9mm.In a glock the rail would probally have broke off.I wish I had saved the box so we could compare lot numbers.
