Great war movies, infantry
« on: October 17, 2022, 12:35:15 PM »
How about SANDS OF IWO JIMA ?  Watch it on Youtube..   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIl5nkD9uQU

My first hitch in the Army, we used the marching song favored among the Marines in that movie. That march to song was,
"Got a Girl in Every Port"...

THen there is ACT OF VALOR..I don't know much about it, except my grandson says it is typical of a Spec Ops mission...  Parts played by and technical advice by Navy SEALS.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2iU8o_WKUk

Then of course, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN... speaks well for itself.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BCbd7EFczg

That was a great movie. I liked "Flying Tigers" as well. I was a little kid and build balsa wood models of airplanes and the P40 was my favorite. It just looked mean although I have learned it wasn't the be all of fighter planes. It sill put a crimp in the Jap's plans though. I went on to build flying models of airplanes but never one of the P-40. My son did buy a flying model though when he was in junior high. We managed to crash it. I finally gave up model airplanes after he graduated high school.

Yes, I remember those old, balsa wood planes. Even the small 1/8" strips to form the body..then [put the paper cover on.

Then comes the test..dampen the paper cover and let it dry.  With luck, it comes outstraight and true.  During WW2, my Dad worked on the old P-40 Warhawks and also the Bell P-39 AirCobras..
He worked for both Curtiss and Bell at differing times.  Neither the P-39 or P-40 were anything super, but they did hold the line until better hardware came along.

I did a balsa and paper P40 when I was a kid too.

Great war movies, infantry: how about “A Walk in the Sun”. Dana Andrews, Richard Conte, Lloyd Bridges, et al.
Theme song “it was just a little walk in the warm Italian sun but it wasn’t an easy one.”

A very interesting twist..  Russian produced war movies are available for free, ...of course with sub titles..

Watching these movies can give one an insight into the Russian psyche and it can be a very interesting discourse.

The movies are entertainig as well..  Here is one movie, called "White Tiger":

You can find more by searching in Youtube for "Russian war movies with English subtitles".

I don't watch many of the vietnam era war movies.  Too many are busy either slamming our country, our troops...or both !

Saving Private Ryan has got to be in there somewhere. Many, many great movies to choose from.
