Check in on snowfall..
« on: November 17, 2022, 04:58:53 PM »
The following is supposed to be a live cam in or near Buffalo.  Nothing to watch , but I may check in now and then..

If Buffalo gets the 6 feet of snow as is being predicted, they may have to put the cam on the roof.  Where I live, if Buffalo gets 6 feet
we will probably get 8 feet.

However, predictions are just that...predictions..  Sometimes the weatherman is right ...and sometimes he is wrong.

If we get 6' on the level, with just a bit of wind, some drifts will be 12-15 feet high..  Below see link..

I still have what I had yesterday morning, except the 8-10 inches have now settled to perhaps 5-6 inches.  No more since then.

As I stated, all that is a "prediction"  ..and sometimes predictions are no more than that.

..Now I hope I don't have to regret my words.. because it still could develop.

Meanwhile, my son is headed up to the city this morning for a couple photo shoots and an executive meeting.  Normally, we just
go about our business and let others worry about the weather.

He's driving his new Ford Maverick pickup, so he has 4WD.. left his usual photography vehicle, a F-ord transit van, at home.

Well hope you don't get what they are calling for in Buffalo.  I know what you mean about forecasts. I remember one year the forecast was calling for 8 inches.  That evening I decided not to plow until morning since we were only going to get 8 inches. I woke the next morning to two feet of snow.

I have seen times when sidewalks were not shoveled clear, so much as tunnels dug to the front door of some residences.

Most of that was due to snow drifting, rather that 10-12 feet on the open, level ground.

See below, 6some shots around Buffalo, probably from the blizzard of '77.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Don't want any of that. 20" in a snow with no wind is the most I have ever seen here. I was newly married with one baby and still living in town at that time and it basically shut the area down. We ran out of milk for the kid and I hiked to the grocery store during the storm for a gallon of milk. Forecast had made no mention of snow so we were unprepared.

The weatherguesser is predicting close to 32 for a high today which is unusual for this time of year and for snow flurries and occasional freezing drizzle staring tonight and continuing through Saturday with a 30% chance of it happening. It probably will only because I and a bunch of other people ran their vehicles through the car wash yesterday.  ::)

Looks like Buffalo is getting the brunt of the storm right now.  The prevailing winds are from south-south west, running the length
of Lake Erie, and piling up on Buffalo and her northern suburbs.
By running the length of Lake Erie, it has all that distance to gather snow from vapors, and drop on the first elevation it hits.

The lake waters are still warm..and so, producing plenty of vapor..ergo, plenty of snow.

In order for me to get hammered, the wind would have to be coming from west, or north west..

The moving weather map shows it well...    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJrUWP1hc2o

I was in Buffalo a few weeks ago,  I'm from Minnesota and thought Buffalo was a cold miserable place.

My son didn't go on into Buffalo this morning...Buffalo is getting hammered.  All roads and highways in Erie county (Buffalo location)
   are closed down..no travel..
Yes Billy; Buffalo  can be cold and miserable.  Westerly winds sweep the length of Lake Erie, and swirl on into Buffalo.  Of course,
ANY city to me, is a miserable place, but* that's just me.

Chicago is called "the windy city", but by the stats, Buffalo has more forceful winds.  I'm sure many warm cities wished they had
that constant breeze during the summer..
