Thanksgiving meal
« on: November 24, 2022, 01:19:36 PM »
Mine was absolutely decadent, one of the best I’ve had food wise. Could only have been better if more family. Anyone else?

My wife and I had a great meal, Hillshire Farms summer sausage, cojack cheese slices, Ritz crackers, and deviled eggs.  Later had fresh homemade bread and then pumpkin chiffon pie.  An excellent day.

Smoked turkey, ham, dressing, giblet gravy, homemade apple pie, pecan pie, the works!

nothing fancy. Turkey, mashed potatoes, the wifes sausage stuffing, corn and rolls. Only ones that showed up this year were the ex son in law and his girlfriend and one grandson and his buddy. Everyone else was working or had to go to some other meal. We used to have big family dinners on thanksgiving and christmas but with dad and ma dying i doubt that will happen anymore.

I would have been 'home alone', since my son & his wife are  travelling.   ..But my son's first wife Laurie, and her family..which includes of course, my three grandsons, one of whom was there and invited me at her request.

The usual thanksgiving fare, and done very well.  ..But then came desert..  I am normally no big desert fellow, but her daughter Caitlin (by her second marriage) did up a few pies..

I had just settled with a cup of steaming coffee..when I heard Laurie say something about pecan pie !  Now, that did
it, I am a sucker for pecan pie...especially the home made kind.

To top it off..as I stood to leave..Laurie handed me a foil covered plate..with two more pieces of pecan pie !

...Blessed with those who have been involved in my life !

Pecan pie is one of my favorites. I made brownies with a large chocolate bar broken up in the batter and fudge topping :)

That would work for me. I got stuck one year unprepared and ended up eating 3 for a dollar hotdogs on thanksgiving and said to myself, never again. Many years later I went to my in-laws for Thanksgiving and had the worse meal since the hotdogs and have taken it totally under my control since. I guess I was spoiled in my youth. For me Fourth of July reigns, then Thanksgiving.

All my immediate family was here, 3 years to 85 years. More groceries that we knew what to do with and too many leftovers. A highlight was my wife made a big bowl of banana pudding, something seldom seen here anymore. There was just enough of it left for each of us to have a small bowl yesterday. Our son always supplies the ham and runs it through his smoker. Nothing available from Hormel or any other brand name supplier so he got a no name one and hoped. I managed one small piece and my wife threw her slice in the trash. We both love ham but this one was awful.

I just finished a turkey leg, some breast meat, mashed potatoes & gravy, some sort of baked corn casserote and dressing Missy sent along with us; she used those plastic one meal containers you get from delis and grocery stores.

Those containers are nice but if one starts saving them, plus all the  Tupper Ware and other dedicated containers one acquires over the years, it gets to be too much and you really do not want to throw away the ones you bought (and never to rarely use) as after you do -- gee I could that one right now. ;D

With that , Thanksgiving ends and celebration of Christ's Mass begins. 8)

;D ;D ;D ;D  I put all those "handy containers" on a small shelf near the floor.  When I open the door and things slide out...I go ahead and clean out nearly the whole thing.
Now that I am an old widower living alone, many people, friends, family, neighbors and church ladies are
presenting me with such full containers of food, and each makes sure I have very good food.

Yes the containers pile up, but I am grateful such conveniences do exist. ;) :D

what drive me nuts is every time i want to use one the lid seems to have disappeared. We have container without lids and lids without containers. I can get the wife to go through it and it seems like a month later were right back to the same place. I think that cupboard is possessed by something evil.

I suggest when someone shows up with a container, offer them all the containers you would otherwise throw away or let them choose what they want. You don’t have to show them your whole stash. I know that when I give others a meal, I just give them the meal and expect the container back. Of course that is just me, butt it adds to the cost of giving to not return the container and after a few times I quit giving... Take it or trash it as I’m just offering my personal perspective.

I do if they are of the usual, purchased containers..but most are of original product-sold-in containers, but still usable, once washed.  Those given me by church ladies, are usually given me at church..and I often bring any substantial containers back to the kitchen.

My wife and I put on the entire spread, for her and me and her adult son. Fourteen pound turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and a dish called calico beans which could be a meal all by itself. We finished the leftovers yesterday.  ;D  Life is good.

I looked up that calico beans, it has everything except the kitchen sink in it. I’ll have to try that one.
