Varget in a .223/5.56
« on: June 13, 2023, 09:16:33 AM »
Looking in the Hodgdon manual, no. 27. Their max load for a 63gr. bullet is 26.4gr. And pressure is 50,700, and that's on their website listed for pistol data.  Now, go to the rifle data, on the website same bullet, 24.1 is max, and pressure is 52,600. I'm loading for an AR-15, and not really interested in breaking speed records, so my previous loads were 1gr under max, and worked just fine. But when I noticed this discrepancy in loads, same cartridge and bullet, one listed for pistol, the other for rifle, anybody got any idea's why??

I use a Lyman manual because their loads are usually hotter.

ill run 24 grains 0f 2230 and its quite a bit faster burning then varget. id say the 26.5 is about spot on and id doubt the 24 grain load even breaks 2800 out of a 16 in ar. vargets better suited for the 308 based cases. matter of fack my mostaccurate powder in my ar10 is a toss up between varget and 4895

Both Varget and Reloader 15 are favorite choices for Service Rifle competitions. They seem to be ideal for pushing the big Sierra 77s into the 10 ring at 600 yards.

Never used varget for anything
It's always been too scarce here and
I've always had 748 on hand
748 and 2520 are great powders for
223
I've also never used "heavy " bullets in
a 223, just 55's- 62's
Always adequate for whatever I'd use
a 223 for
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

My hard copy of Hodgden #27 indicates the max load and pressure for a 223 caliber, 63 gr. rifle OR pistol bullet is the same 26.4 gr. of Varget and 50,700 CUP.  Either the web site or their Data Manual is in error.

You should bring it to Hodgden's attention so a web-correction or hard copy "errata" can be distributed.  It is probably not the only one.  Let us know what they say so we can stay on top of this.
