.45 Super Reliability Problem
« on: March 26, 2005, 11:11:37 AM »
I have a 22# Wolff Spring and a KKM barrel in my M-21.

With normal pressure .45 acp loads all was fine. Today I fired 60 rounds of 230 ball at about 800 fps with perfect function.

I then tried some loads with Blue Dot and W/W 230 H.P. bullets in Starline .45 Super brass. The charges was about 15% more than the load above.

Reliability was very poor. Several times the slide stayed open with rounds in the magazine, and several time the nose of the round in the magazine didn't come "up" enough to feed. Jams were around 50% of the time, and were worse with more than three rounds in the magazine.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Mag springs. With the higher slide velocity the springs aren't strong enough to present a round it time for proper feeding. If the slide is locking back early, check to make sure the slide lock spring is correctly installed. If that's ok, make sure your support thumb is not engaging the slide stop durring recoil. Bet it's one or the other.

I think you answered your own question. use what it was designed for, the totally reliable standard pressure rounds you tried first!

You might want to try the Wolff +10% springs in your magazines. I have them in all my Glocks.

That said, I finally gave up on the .45 Super (and .450 SMC) in the G21.

Fortunately, I have a Blackhawk convertible to shoot the ones I still have.

I've also given up on firing .45 Super in the Model 21.

I really like the gun, and am not willing to damage it or to reduce it's useful life.

The recoil with what were lower end .45 Super loads was very sharp, and was strong enough to change the functional dynamics of the pistol. That's when I stop. There are old, bold reloaders, but they often have damaged guns. I choose not to take that chance.

If I feel the need for more punch than the .45 acp offers, I'll use my 629 Classic.
