Old-Fashioned Diner Foods That will Take You Back

https://www.gourmandize.com/article-10308-old-fashioned-diner-foods-that-will-take-you-back.htm

What makes this site worth looking at, is that while I/we grew up with most of this, so much is dissapearing along with the restaurants from which it was basic menu items.

Thirty years ago I was at a Thank God it/s Friday restaurant and asked for a chocolate shake, the gent said they did not have those but he could make me a bar drink that greatly resembled one.
It was pretty darn good!

In don't know if it is still there anymore, but there was a small privately owned diner on rt 20, along
the shore of Lake Erie, That served a special breakfast dish, that had wide appeal..
..Back when my son was driving OTR truck, I was riding with him one morning when we stopped by that little place.

He ordered the specialty for both of us.  I was called, "Trucker's mess"..  A rather inglorious name for a hearty,
  stick-to-the-ribs breakfast.
As I recall; it consisted of an extra large helping of home fries, egg, some corn beef hash, a little cheese and maybe some bacon ...along with choice of toast & butter..

Not cheap, but fairly priced..and very popular with truckers on that busy route.  Filled the entire dish..deep..

Many areas have various potato dishes..fries, hash browns etc.  Around here, on a breakfast dish 'home fries'
are popular, especially for breakfast.  Small dish home fries below...

nothing better then skillet breakfast. I do eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage onion and cheddar cheese and when its done smother it in home made sausage gravy!! Lots of work though. Resteraunts have the advantage of having there grill top where they can cook everything at the same time. But i have to fry the hashbrows and onion, bacon sausage and eggs in seperate pans. tell you a quick breakfast thats a bit different but we like. I take a can of corned beef hash and add egg and cheese to it and make breakfast burritos out of it. Again better if you ladle some sausage gravy over them but then ANYTHING is better with sausage gravy covering it.

A lightly toaster blueberry bagle was breakfast this morning. I just had my annual appointment with my neurologist Wednesday and my weight has held steady for a year now so I must be eating close to right.

Tomorrow morning will be bacon, sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits. gravy, and who know what else with all my family. Son, daughter, son-in-law, grand daughter, and probably her oldest daughter will be doing the cooking and tripping over each other as grandma has been relegated to sitting and watching which is all she needs to be doing at this point in time.

Today I ate two Pop-Tarts, or the equivalent of; some thing I have not had for a long, long time.

Generally , if I eat breakfast, it is rarely not toast with sour cream or cheese micro-wave melted on bread but traveling 12 time out of 13 I order steak and eggs with hash browns.
That is some thing that , in my opinion, the little off the beaten path Ma and Pop restaurants make better. 8)

Sometimes, when travelling, I will go miles out of the way, just to patronize one of those old time rail car diners.

On a blizzard day like today, I sit and savor a planned trip on my scooter, when the tour will take in two separate
  Diners.
#1.. will be breakfast at the Modern Diner in Wellsville, NY.. #2  lunch or dinner at the Wellsboro Diner in Wellsboro,
     PA.

BRAVO, good for you!

Back when I was landscaping and weighed fifty pounds less, I would at a place like that with similar prices, order double my order for two eggs and potatoes . ;D

When out of town I look for full parking lots with robust people going in and out. Hasn’t failed me yet.

Won't be a long- trip on my scooter..  Wellsville is only 50 miles and Wellsboro is only 103 miles, so it is only a couple hundred miles for that day.
Should be a good ride though..through farm country..plus Wellsboro claims "the Grand Canyon of the east" as part of their natural landscape.
I'll stop on the way at the Golden Age cheese factory, and pick up some of their epicurean delight.

  Spring dreaming, already !
