"Survivalist" shows on TV..
« on: February 12, 2023, 04:11:10 AM »
Sure, they are a bit of TV hokey..but some tips can be gained..

Some, such as the two British Spec Ops veterans are not exciting, but they have some good knowledge to share.

Then there is the "ALONE" series, which is mostly located in the pacific northwest, and IMO seems to reflect a bit
closer to what a true survival situation may be like.
In other words, with a downed plane, a wrecked boat or even a broken snow machine or ATV, where you may be left with clothes and some basic survival equipment, and perhaps with a boat, plane or snow machine you cannibalize.

The most ridiculous one would be the "naked and afraid" series. I cannot feature a scenario, where one would be left completely unclothed...especially where you would be naked, but still have a knife, tarp and a cook pot.

I think the "naked'"scenario is just a way to arouse some prurient interest....

The ones I've watched where they
destroy serviceable items to rig
something aggravate me.
You never ever tear up something
unless repair is impossible to make
some other project that may or
may not work.
I always think of when I was in
BSA when it was a worthwhile
endeavour, and at a camp one
summer the instructor was showing
everybody how to take off your
official scout web belt and unravel
it for string. Being the innocent kid
I was, I'd asked what we were supposed
to use for a belt for our pants after
we'd destroyed our belts? I guess
it ticked off the expert, but it was
an honest question and he didn't
have a good answer because it's
stupid to tear up one good working
thing to build a rigged up something.
I made a rope to get a badge of
whatever it was, but I sure wouldn't
go out and about anticipating to
have to twist up some vines or bark
to tie up something that a 2 dollar
piece of factory cord could do a
better job of.

It's way better to have your rope
and proper cutting tools and a
cooking utensils and vessels
than to spend however long
whittling forks and spoons and
twisting up vines to make a fishing
line.
Some of the backwards logic we
have today.  . .
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Don't have TV at home, but saw "Naked and Afraid" while I was in the hospital. Seemed hokey to me.

Anybody come up with a survivalist scenario where one would be naked...but still  have some basic survival tools?

I read the guy who started Naked and Afraid wanted to see how Adam and Eve survived.  Well, he hasn't read the Bible.  Adam and Eve were clothed by God with animal skins.  Hmm.  So they weren't naked, but maybe afraid.

Alone is yes, probably the most accurate in a real survival situation.  Dual Survival was fairly good, giving you ideas on what to do and how to do it.   Man-Woman wild was also good using various scenarios.
