anybody else like CCI Mini Mags?

I recently changed over from Winchester Super X to the CCI's cause they were more reliable in my autoloaders...

I always found CCI Mini mags to group better on average than most other brands.  And they never gave me any misfires.  I do find that I get flyers with them which open up groups.  they are still pretty accurate.

A really good bargain if you can find it is Winchester Dynapoints.  When I used to shop at Kmart, I would always go buy a 500 round bulk box for $10.  They are hi velocity 40 grain copper washed bullets with just a dimple of a hollowpoint.

I found them more accurate and much cheaper than CCi Mini mags.  But I havent been able to find another source for them.

What I have always wanted to find, but have been unable is the Winchester Silouete hi velocity with the 42 grain bullet.  They are supposed to be very accurate too.

Wolfe (made in Germany) in my Ruger Govt. Model and TC.  The most accurate ammo I have come across...better than Fedaral Gold Medal and Winchester T22.

I buy a box of each brand I run across and test them in each of my .22s. If one is really accurate in a certain gun, I try to buy a case or two of that lot number and mark which gun shoots it the best. All of my .22s seem to have a different taste in ammo. :(

I've been using the Federal 550 round bulk pack ammo and I'm happy with them.

the mini mag hp shoots best so far. i can't shoot the federal at all. they suck in my guns. from what i hear the wolf match target is excellent. i'll have to try some for sure. 8)

My 21" Contender carbine in .22 Match likes the Federal Gold Medal Match.
Ive heard the Wolf brand is excellent also but have not tried any yet. Usual groups with the Federal GMM in my bbl rarely go over 3/8" at 50 yards.

The ammo I've had success with is Eley Tenex (ouch, that's expensive), Aguila Standard (VERY accurate and inexpensive), and (surprisingly) CCI Blazers.  I used to like Federal Standard but their price increases put it out of the running since I found it no more accurate or reliable than others.  Everything else I've shot was driven more by price that accuracy.  PMC was good for a while, but then accuracy dropped off.  Remington Target was good 20 years ago, but now it has too many misfires.  My gauge for ammo is functional reliability and accuracy which dives my top three.

I have a New England Firearms 9 shot revolver that likes CCI stingers.  I have a Ruger 10-22 that seems to like the CCI mini mags.  I have an old Winchester model 69A bolt action, that is really accurate with just about any LR cartrige I put in it.  For all around shooting, for the money I like the mini mags best.

They work great, Stingers are good too. I tried the spendy 'Velociters' and wasnt very impressed.  I also like to keep the  'Quickshok' on hand for varmints.  They fragment into 3 peices.  I have heard that CCI makes a SGB (small game bullet), but I haveny been able to find them.  For general use in my yard, I use CCI  C.B's. They are quiet and dont get my neighbors upset.

The mini mags are what I shoot most in my Ruger MKII. They shoot well and don't cost an arm and a leg.

I am a little lost as to what ammo I like as no mention has been made to what use it is intended for. Now if hunting is the task at hand then i really like the CCI SGB. If I am target shooting the Lapua Match is defintley what I recommend. I noticed at Camp Perry last year VERY few shooters were still using Federal Gold Medal. I inquired as to why and was informed that the quality is crap and has deteriated from the start. :(  I figure those guys shoot a lot more than I do and I will listen to them. Lapua shoots like crazy in all my guns. Lastly if I am hunting "big-game";a.k.a. woodchucks, then Aguila is what I pack. I have found it to pack a little more wallop than the Stingers

Cheap Winchester Wildcats perform very well in my automatics and revolvers, as do CCI standard velocity, and Blazers. The Winchester Dynapoints are fine, too, but good luck finding them. Now to make any of these a good hunting bullet try the .22 Hollow Pointer offered by E. Arthur Brown. It makes a hollow point out of solids or make a cheap hollow point into a real humdinger.

.22 ammo....
« Reply #14 on: May 01, 2003, 03:06:24 PM »
I grew up on CCI Mini Mag's, and CCI Stingers if I really wanted to smack something.  Then I matured (ok, at least a little) and now figure out which ammo EACH GUN prefers then I go get a bunch of it.  Depending on what I'm going to do, decides which .22 & ammo combo I will bring.

That said, a couple years ago I discovered WINCHESTER POWER POINTS, and they have shot good to great in basically every .22 I've tried it through.  It is my "go to" ammo of choice when testing out a new .22, handgun or rifle.  And it is VERY effective on critters in the field!

Good luck finding your guns magic ammo!

For those looking for Winchesters Dynapoints, Wal-Mart can get them if they don't have them. Talk to the sporting goods manager about ordering them for you. Beware they will have to by 5 cases to get them from thier supplier, so they may not be too willing to do so. They run $9.63 a brick if you can get them. What I did was got some of the guys I shoot with, to buy some. So I just ordered 4 cases ($96.30 a case) and the manager was okay doing that, thinking that he only had one case left to get rid of. But by the time they came in, 2 weeks, I had enough buyers together for all 5. He told me that he will be stocking them on a full time basis now.

8) in my case, i have owned a ruger .22/45 since april of this year. i belong to blackcreek shooter's club, and we have numerous ranges, anywhere from 7 1/2 yds to 100 yds. anyway, sorry to ramble on, my problem is i can't seem to find anything that will shoot consistently in my pistol. remington vipers seem to operate the best, but i loose accuracy. however, i have not tried the cci mini mags yet, so maybe i really lucked out and found this forum. i am pleased to have signed up as a new member! you as a group may have helped me the first night!

zarrau,
I have two 22/45s that I use for NRA falling plates. I see a lot of misfires with several brands of ammo. I, myself, have had a few problems with Federal and Winchester brands. Both of my Rugers group better than I can hold with CCI mini mags. Plus, I have never had a misfire with CCI! I don't think you'll be disappointed with the mini mags.

I just tried the CCI Velocitors. They shoot better than Stingers for me, and they are devastating on small game.

I have found that my modified 10/22 really likes the CCI Velocitors.  I too have the problem of each of my .22's preferring different ammo for best accuracy.  I mainly shoot targets so I'm looking for accuracy, not "knock-down" power.  Wolf Match Target and CCI Mini-Mags are pretty good all around performers though.
I like to say that I pick the gun and I let the gun pick the ammo.

Anyboby know how I can get a Hanned Line 22 cal bullet trim die.  I think they are called . . . 22cal SGB.  Something like that.

I tried the Hanned tool. The ammo doesn't kill nearly as well as hollow points.

Interesting.   I've never hunted with rounds from the die myself.   But, and ole' hunting buddy use to have a 3 die set.  LR, SHORT and MAG.  We'd cut bullets and shoot alum soda cans filled with water.   They seem to wack pretty hard.  I haven't been able to get Hanned Line on line.   I wonder if they are still in business?
Thanks . . .

Don't know that I have settled on a favorite, but I avoid the Remington Thunderbolt as I get misfires with them.  The primer compound does not seem to be evenly distributed around the rim.  A second whack in another spot usually sets them off.  I haven't tried them for a while so maybe this problem has been corrected.

22 LR for 22 mag barrels
« Reply #26 on: April 13, 2004, 04:33:51 PM »
For convertable revolvers, which usually have a 224 barrel for the 22 Mag, what 22 LR works best?

I've heard rumors of a 22 LR with a 224 bullet just for this application.  Any body ever heard of it?
