Some people love it, but I would hate to spend the rest of my life without trees...and a somewhat varied landscape..

Cold make my bones ache now. At least I can stay warm outside most the time right where I am. Trees? Don't need no steenkin' trees. Living my entire life on the south plains made me used to that. Mountains and trees are pretty but I can only stand to be in them for a short time. I like to be able to see a long way and not feel hemmed in.

Interesting, as I grew up in the eastern woods I don’t like openness as I can find no place to hide unless I turn into a rock or a bush.

There are trees in the interior ,depending on where your at. Aspens, Spruce and oaks. Ski slopes and other things.NO snakes  :)
The Vikings planted the oaks for their ship building. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_forests_in_Iceland.
And you get free heating during the winter.

I understand they have hot springs, but I didn't know they could heat a good share of the residences.

Their largest forest is 756 hectares, it was the land that was saved, and expanded, when they realized what deforestation was doing to the land.
There are other smaller ones.

I understand they have hot springs, but I didn't know they could heat a good share of the residences.

They use a sub surface collection system of water ,and steam pipes buried down deep into the ground. And feed it into surface home radiators. Iceland is a volcanic country, with underground steaming hot water. This also runs the power plants.

They have an average yearly temp of 40 degrees. I know as with most people they always see greener grass on the other side.

They also get the Northern lights and long dark winters. Only about five hours of any sunlight. They had a problem with lava recently. Flowing down into the sea, it added a few more acres to the island like it does in Hawaii sometimes.

There was once back in the 10th century seafaring fellow who lived in Norway. He had a bad temper..he killed a
neighbor.  It was pure  temper..so he was banished from Norway.
So Thorvald had to go somewhere!  At that point, little choice..so he fled to Iceland..

..But wouldn't you know...his son's temper got brought on  trouble once more....  So Erik the Red  killed his
neighhbor...so here comes another banishment... from Iceland.

Well, not many options left...but he had. heard of this place to the north west, that some of his acquaintances
had come upon..so again Erik sailed west with a party and settled in Greenland.

It sounds like both Iceland and Greenland were 2nd and 3rd choices for that explorer.   ;) ;D

Today, the total forested area is 200.000 hectares which is a little over 2 percent of the ice-free surface of Iceland. Not much compared to the total area of the country but much more than 100 years ago. A little less than 2 million hectares is meadow, and some 100.000 hectares is cultivated land.

Never mind Bob,  you have never been there. Travelers in Iceland are met with unusual variability in landscape and land condition. Within only a short distance they will experience anything from lush vegetation, fertile agricultural areas, sparse vegetation and desert.Bob why don't you go there? Deserts lol.
