new toy

thinking of a new toy for next year.here is the requirements;
good for deer thru elk,more deer,antelope than elk but should still be able to do the job,
east and west
able to drop game out to 300yds(i don't shoot past 200,but ...)
not a heavy, hard to tote rifle.
24-26"barrel.
i was looking at a .280 remington in a remington 700 bdl ss.but am open to sugestions.

Try one of the new rem ultra mags,They will do all that and more.

You mention a "new" toy...what do you already have?

Okay, deer through elk, but mostly deer and antelope.  Try a .270 Winchester, 270 WSM, 280 Rem., 7mm. Rem. Mag. (not the ultra mag. - although it would certainly work), 7mm WSM, 30-06, & 300 WSM.

I mention the WSMs, inter alia, because they are generally lighter and more compact than their longer action siblings.

:-D You have the same delimma I do. What have you already got in house? That would help us make a better suggestion. :lol: Hard to beat an 06,.308,.270 or .280. They have lower recoil energy with comparable down range ballistics to the magnums.

i got a .17 rem bolt,.257 roberts ul bolt,30-06 #1a,30-06 pump,45/70 lever.i reload for 257 roberts,25-06,243,30-06,300win mag,45-70.looking hard at the .300 win mag and .280,mabe a 338/06 for custom bolt rifle.don't know about those "new"ultra mags,seems like they promise alot but really what are you getting?

I went to Colorado for the first time this year and made a shot of a life time on a mule deer.  My rifle is a Abolt 7mm mag.  I know this rifle well as I shoot it almost weekly.  While this rifle is deadly on game it was a pain to carry around in those mountains.  It's long and heavy and seems to snag every branch.  That got me thinking of a rifle that would hit as hard as my 7 mag but be a little lighter and shorter.

After looking at several rifles I picked a Browning Abolt 270 WSM.  I put a Zeiss 3x10x44 scope on it.  From the bench 1 inch groups are common at 100 yards with factory loads and while I haven't reloaded for it yet I know this rifle is going to be a shooter.

This rifle is a good pound lighter than my 7 mag and with the short action and shorter length it may just replace my old trusty 7 mag.

Well, at last we finally have someone willing to admit that his umpteenth gun is really a toy! Here's my 2-penny opinion:

Savage m 16FSS short-action weather warrior in 7mm-08. Yes, I know it only has a 22" inch barrel, but honestly you will never notice a difference in performance on game and it will "hang brush" considerably less. At only 6 lbs. with a stainless action/barrel, it's one of the best bargains out there for a high-performance lightweight rifle.

My $.02 worth.

I just got my 'toy' gun.  It is a Lazzeroni Savage 16LZ in Lazzeroni's 7.82 Patriot caliber.  The gun is $500.00 and you can shoot pretty much anything that won't eat you (and some that would) with it.  (I firmly believe that you can't have enough gun if you can stand the recoil).  This one kicks about like the 300 WM but does a bunch more.  Check out the Lazzeroni web site for info.

Mygun is a 7mm Rem Mag, but I had to have a toy.
