How many would be interested in a .445 Super Mag project
« on: February 24, 2004, 09:35:02 AM »
I'm willing to order the reamer from Manson end of next month (income tax will be back by then) :-D if we can get several people willing to do it. The reamer is 160.00 with a solid pilot. It would be nice to get at least 5 other guys. Who wants to do this.

Nobody interested in pushing a 265 grain bullet close to 2000 FPS in a rifle. Has a lot more punch than the than the 44 mag with out the kick of a 444 marlin, plus you can still shoot 44 mag thru it. Would make a great woods thumper. Sounds like a winner to me.

BBF,

You are making wish I had put a 44 mag barrel on my order when I sent my gun in last Month. I am getting a 45-70 and am having a hard time justifying a 44 mag as well.

Richard_mtaylor I have a 450 Ultra hunter but still plan on getting me a 445 SM rifle. I like the idea of a big bullet, not a lot of recoil, can shoot 44's thru it, and something that few other people around have. Plus it is another round I have to reload. I'm really hooked on this reloading. :-D

22KHornet either way let me know when you want to. I'm buying the reamer and figured 20.00 for each guy who uses it being it is one of the more expensive reamers. Which is still cheaper than renting one.

Yeah I am hooked on it now too. I reloaded shotshells for many years but this mettalic stuff is awsome. I bought my first rifle ever in November. Now I have more stuff than I am afraid to list.......... don't want to leave a paper trail. You would not believe the amount of brass that I have prepared for my new 45-70, and 223 barrels. I started with the Lee anniversary kit. Then got a Lee turret press to keep from having to screw dies in and out, and the other day I was at my local geun shop buying primers and bought a Hornady lock and load Classic press that had been in stock for  awhile...........for 59.95. They are aound $110 at midway and man is it sweet resizing the 270 brass. I wonder if I call H&R if they will add a barrel to my order over the phone.

Yes they will add a barrel to your order. I started with the Lee anv. kit as well and plan on getting a Lee turret press also. I never thought reloading could be so relaxing and my boys love to help. :-D

Factory 300gr loads in the 45-70 are just about what BBF is talking bout for the 445.  Rem factory loads a 300gr at 1880fps.  recoil differences between the two will not be detectable by most anyone, in my mind.  Plus the 45-70 CAN   go much more if you want to.

There is a thread running here where a 265gr pistol bullets is wrapped with teflon tape (like paper patching) and shot from the 45-70.  Lots to play with.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Well, I gotta git my .44 mag. barrel first, if ever.  :( To be honest I was leaning more toward a .444 Marlin if that's a possibility to do by hand. If not, .445 sounds good.  8)

Hey BBF count me in as soon as I get my barrel's in. I guess I messed up when Midway had the reamer in the closeout program for $30. I was a finish reamer, but it would probably have worked. Also did you get the pages I sent to you?      Digger

BBF, I have really been biting my lip and staying out of this one. I think the 445 is a great little cartridge and would make a neat rifle, but I wouldn't rechamber a perfect 44 barrel for it, especially if I had a 450.

The real beauty of reloading is being able to take a case like the 450 and get 44 Mag to start level 458 Mag performance. Any 458 cast bullet of 300-350 grains pushed by either light loads of pistol powders or full case loads of very slow powders like 4350 on down through 870 will be perfect duplicates of cartridges like the 454 Casuel, 480 Ruger and 475 Linebaugh. For years I approached reloading from the standpoint of getting maximum velocity from a cartridge. Today maximum performance means something different to me, it is exploring every level of performance a case has to offer. Trust me, 44 caliber 200 grain bullets at a mere 800 fps are an absolute pleasure to shoot. I can shoot them all day, did so many times this past summer, and when deer season came was as in tune with my rifle as it is possible to be, which made it possible for me to be able to take some quick shots that would otherwise have been "there it is...there it goes"

They will be making that reamer for quite a while yet. It may well be that the 445 SM is just what you are looking for, but I don't think you are giving your 450 a fair shake. Try it with some light loads. Use Springfield Trapdoor data, you will be quite fine with them. If it can be done in a 45-70 case, it can be done in the 450 as well.

I speak on this only because I would hate for you to tie up your money in the 445, when you already have one. The 445 won't do any thing your 450 won't do, and your 450 will do plenty your 445 will never do. One reloader to another, give your 450 a test run on its full span of capability. Everything you learn from the 450 will give you an edge taking the 445 to it's ful range of potential.

JPH45 you are right  about the 450 it will and can do anything that 445 could never do. I have 450 dies and plan to do some testing of different bullet weights for it. I can shoot the 450 with full power loads and it does not bother me. I just want a 445. Plan and simple. I really appreciate the advice. Shoot as far as not reaming a 44 to 445 because I have a 450 would be reasonable for some but i'm one off those people who gets something in his mind there is no changeing me. I really enjoy reloading like I never thought possiable. I'm going to end up doing 3 445 SM. One for me and one for each of my boys. I setting up one NEF receiver for both of them. The calibers will be 7mm-08, 223 Rem, and 445 SM. You are a very knowledgable person and will probally be asking you a lot of questions about reloading. If you do not mind.

The main reason I like the 445 idea is that beginners can start with 44mag. and as their skills improve they can move on up to the 445, and then to my 444. After all of that they can go on up to a 30 06 or 300 mag.
It looks like a perfect training rifle to me exactly halfway between the 44 mag. and the 444.     Digger

Well I got my new Lee Turret press, 2 extra turrets, case tumbler, 44 carbide dies, and brass and 240 grain XTP's. Now I just need to order the reamer. Will do that next week. Going to call H&R at the end of March to see if they have their 44 barrels yet. I know they do not have any right now. I already have a 44 mag but need two more barrels for my boys.

If you've already got the chamber reamer then this may be too late, but I wonder how much velocity could be picked up in a .44 mag by running a large-rifle primer-pocker uniformer into the brass and then experimenting with various primers.     Sure, the pressures may be beyond 'normal' .44 mag' limits (which used to be 43,500 cup unlike what you oftentimes see in todays booklets) but the Handi's will probably take the pressures with no problem.     If I had a .44 mag' Handi' I'd try it, but I only have a revolver in .44 mag'.

Make any sense to you, BigBore?

BBF, I have been scratching my head and searching my catalogs. You can save yourself a hundred bucks by doing the job with a .44 neck and throater. What you are really doing is extending the neck of a .44 mag. The bulk of the chamber is already cut. All you need to do is to mark the necker and throater to show you how deep to go. A wrap of electrician's tape will do that.

Thanks DJ, I'll keep that in mind. SS it makes sense, but I don't think I can get another 300 or 350 FPS by just changing primers. Thanks for the idea though.
