9X can be better for killing paper, 2X offers a wider FOV.

Two pretty similar scopes.
Like Randy said, slightly wider field of view with 2x7.
Slightly better for longer shot with 3x9.
I have the 3x9, I like it, and I did make a good 20 yard shot with it, so it does work at close range.
Ironically, when the smoke cleared, I realized in my excitement I had not rolled the scope down to 3x, so I made that shot with 9 power. I didn't notice when I was pulling the trigger.
Today at the range I looked at a target at 9x at 20 yards, it was fuzzy.
Not too fuzzy for combat purposes, though.

I actually have both...I have a 3-9x40 Bushnell Banner on my Huntsman and a 2-7x32 Tasco World Class Black Powder on my CVA Hunterbolt. The 2-7 should be enough for black powder.

I favor the 2X7.....except when I use the 1X4. Field of view is my choice, plus rarely would I ever need 8-9X at the ranges I typically take my deer.

I have a 2.5 to 8 and it's always sitting on 2.5 unless I'm at the range. The only game that I ever took above 2.5 was an elk at 400 yds. All the deer that I've taken with the rifles that have this scope on them were taken at 2.5x. There have been many occasions where a snap shot was need or moving game that the wide field of view was valuable. I'm always very careful to make sure that I turn down the power before I leave the range. It's always a good idea to check your groups at the lower power as well. These scopes are on centerfire rifles, I have a fixed power 2.75x on my inline.

I like to sight in at 8x. When hunting woods (stalking), I like to have the
scope mag set at 4x. Depending on distance at a stand, I usually use
6-9x. Think it all adds up to the type of hunting one does, and personal
preference. Mine is 4-12x, but I rarely use over 9x.

Wide FOV is for those who have trouble getting their scope on target. :-D

The difference to me and my old eyes is the light gathering capabilities of the 40 lens to the 32 lens especially in low light conditions. I am now using 3x9x40 for that reason...

Same here except for the old part.... The magnification power isn't the issue to me, I just prefer the larger objective lens of the 3-9x40. I can use all the extra minutes of shooting time in the morning/evening that I can get. I do have to wonder though if the extra 8mm objective size outweighs the higher 3x magnification power in low light....

Other than the already mentioned FOV advantage the only plus I can see to the 2-7x32 is that you might be able to use lower scope rings which could be a help with eye-scope alignment on some rifles.

For me it's the 3-9x40 here. If the 2-7 had the 40mm objective it'd be a toss up though.

Not only will the 2-7 have more field of view, a 2-7 will likely have more windage/elevation adjustment.

You might be surprised-- but, it doesn't work quite that way. At low power, a 2 X 32 has close to FOUR times the exit pupil a middle-aged eye can use, still double at 4X. The difference at dawn / dusk is lens quality-- a HQ 32 MM objective scope can give you a brighter image than a 44mm objective with lesser glass.

I have a couple 2-7x32's on my hunting guns. I really like the small size and they are bright enough to shoot 1/2 hour before or after sunrise or sunset (legal hours here) in the woods. They are plenty for range work in my opinion. I have a 223 and all I have on it is a 2-7x.

I also agree with Randy. If I have my choice between a 2-7x32 with good glass vs a lesser quality 3-9x40, I would go with the better glass. In my opinion the quality of the optics has as much if not more to do with than the objective size. I always look at my 2x pistol scopes as an example, they are 20mm objectives and are plenty bright for hunting during legal hours.
