Case Extraction
« on: March 24, 2004, 12:33:30 PM »
Hey guy's,

Maybe someone can help me figure this out. I bought an Auto Ordinance 1911, the pistol is quite accurate but I have one major issue with it. The darn thing ejects cases straight up in the air and end up bouncing off of my grape and usually I can count on at least one hot fast moving case to to dot me right on my forehead or nose. As you can see, this can get very distracting when firing at higher rates. Do you think a new extractor or altering the existing one will cure this ?

It's not the extractor buddy, it's the ejector (the part that's pinned into the frame).  Lots of fellas switch to a 38 Super or 9mm ejector to cure that same problem, and sometimes some 1911s need the ejection port lowered just a bit in addition to a new ejector.  My lightweight Colt Commander used to do exactly the same thing, until I installed a different extractor.  I would come home after a range session and my wife could count the number of empties that had dinged the ol noggin just by counting the number of half moon dirt marks she could see on my forehead.  You might be able to get your current ejector to eject the empties out at a different angle with a little gunsmithing work, if you can do it or if you have a competent 1911 gunsmith in your area who can do that work for you.

Also, put in a call to the Auto Ordnance folks, they may have a replacement that could cure the problem.  Hope this helps.  Mikey.

Remove the extractor and bend it left a little (in the direction the nose is pointing). This will apply more tension and it should sling the case out to the right side.
