What bow length?
« on: March 24, 2004, 05:19:00 PM »
Hi all.... I was just wondering what bow length you prefer in a longbow?  Personally I gravitate towards the 68" bows as to me they have always shot very smoothly but aren't so long that I would constantly plowing the ground with the lower tip.  Also, keeping all my bows the same length makes it a heck of a lot easier having a spare string available... one string fits any of them.

I like the longbows I have been making.  Hickory backed maple at 72".  They are wide limbed, 1 3/4-2" and the have very little string follow. They shoot sweet, and they have charm.  I don't seem to have trouble with the extra length, 'cause we shoot close over the hand and we cant to 2 o'clock.   :D

Hi Jeff...... You have caught my interest.  Primitive archery (wood bows and wood arrows) is becoming increasing popular at a lot of the blackpowder "rendezvous" events.  Finding a quality all wood bow though isn't all that easy.  The few that I've bought through eBay have been pretty much a gamble... you really have no idea on what you will be getting until it arrives on your doorstep.  Have stayed mostly with the vintage Yorks and Ben Pearsons, keeping a couple of the Ben Pearsons for myself and reselling the rest.  So just what is it that you make?

I like the 68" slightly deflexed selfbows myself. I don't worry about it plowing into the ground much as I cant my bow some and I am six tall myself so I have plenty of room for tip clearance on the ground ...
for even a bows at  72" end to end.

I made two total, so I definitely not ready for the commercial market.  Meare Heathe design is the way to go for white wood nows.  The bows I made were hard rock maple backed with a thin piece of hickory.  Here is the picture of mine, I have to get pictues of the one I made for my wife.  If you are handy at all, I would suggets getting a copy of Traditional Boyers Bible I and "going to school" , that's how I did it. There is a wealth of knowlege and advise on the internet, all ya have to do is heed it.  Here's that link:
