Fiocchi Hulls?
« on: March 11, 2004, 08:35:21 PM »
Has anybody been using the 12GA fiocchi hulls for reloading?

I was at the range the other day and there were hundreds of the orange ones left lieing. I know there is some limited load data on them, so they "can" be reloaded, but as I have several thousand old style AA's, Fed Gold Medals on hand I haven't bothered to pick up the odd ball hulls I see.

How do the W209, or CCI primers fit in them? Are they loose, because of the Cheddite primers originally used? How do they crimp? Do you have to adjust your final crimp die to suit them, say from the AA setting?

Just curious, as I know one day I will have to start collecting hulls again, although it seems the old AA's, and GM's last forever.

If I saw more of the STS hulls, I would be grabbing all of them I could find! :P

I've loaded the Fiocchi hulls with no problem.  I made no adjustments for crimp from what I was using for AA oldstyle hulls, and WW 209 primers seemed to work fine.  The case has a bit more volume than AA hulls, and I don't think the plastic will hold up as long, but they are dandy for 1 1/4 oz loads and more.  You might want to use them for hunting where the hulls might make it back home with you.  I even tried some Fiocchi slug hulls that were originally roll crimped and they took an eight point crimp with no problem.

So Bob, ever try the WAA12 wad or WT12? I gather they are more like the Fed GM hull, in there design, so perhaps other wads would be more appropriate? I suppose as ,if you are loading 1-1/4oz loads, you would use a different wad for the bigger shot weight. I was just thinking of using them for target loads for trap 1oz, or 1-1/8oz...

The load I used came directly from Lyman Shotgun Reloading Manual #4:
26.0 gr 800X, WW209 Primer, WAA12F114 wad, Fiocchi low base hull, 1 ΒΌ oz of shot.  The manual says this should produce 1267 fps at 8300 psi.  It was marked as a ballistically most uniform load.  I did not see any WAA12 loads that caught my eye when I was looking up loads.
