Elk with 375 Winchester?
« on: January 22, 2004, 09:08:05 AM »
:D I was wondering what opinions people have on using a 375 Winchester for elk in a contender. I was considering finding one of these barrels for this purpose. What range would it be good for? Thanks

The .375 Winchester (NOT H&H Mag) have some pretty big bullets, but they are not pushed too fast.  In fact, they are pushed reeeaaaaal slow compared to the H&H.

Does this mean that they won't work for elk?  No, I can't say that.  Not that I have personal experience with this round on elk, but I would think that it should be "okay" for shots at 100 yards, and shots under 50 yards should be even finer.  I really would not recommend it for shots over 50 yards.

The 375 win is a great caliber. My dad has one and does a great job on deer. If you go after elk use good 250 grain bullets, foreget about 220 grain they are made for deer. If you don't reload check out buffalo bore for there ammo. I would not pass up a shot at 150 yard with a good 250 grain bullet if the elk os broadside. If you encounter a angle shot then I would limit that shot to 100 yards.

Elk are no problem for the great 375 Win.The keys are these:good shot placement, good high quality ammo intended for use on large game, and reasonable shooting distances.A few years back a friend of mine took a large 6x5 elk at 165yds in Arizona, with one shot.He was using a Savage M99A in 375Win,with 235gr Speers at around 2400fps.

The key when using ammo intended for much hotter rounds than the 375Win.Is to get velocity high enough to get good penetration, and so it will also give you the mushroom effect seen it the hotter rounds, like 375 H&H.

freddogs -

I have a Marlin 375 I used for antelope last year.  I push a Hornady 220 grain bullet to around 2300fps 39.0g using AA1680 and a CCI 200 primer.

The antelope fell at 162 lasered yards and the bullet was a pass-through.  I would not hesitate to use this load on elk out to 200 yards, but I would limit my shot to a heart/lung shot.

I agree!! 150-200 yds using 235 or 250gr bullet. Shot placement is key!!
Great round!!
