I'd start with something like the Cass Creek Preditor model.  It's small, digital, inexpensive, and has five sounds.  Jackrabbit, Cottentail, Cayote Howl, Pup Yips, and Fawn Distress.  I bought mine for around $30.00.  I also commendiered the battery powered speakers my son uses with his walkman they have their own amplifier, and really boost the volumne.  Cass Creek actually makes an amplified externial speaker for this unit also.  Amplification is nice but not neccessary, the unit works well as is.  Start out with low volumne, then after a few tries with no response increase the voulmne.  The digital calls are real easy, just press the button once and wait for the sequence, it will end after a predetermined time.  Then wait for five to eight minutes then press the button again.  If no response after 40 to 45 minutes move to another location, usually 1/4 to 1/2 mile away.  Then set up and do it all over again.  Remember only use the pup and fawn calls when pups and fawns are around in the late spring.  My Johnny Stewart is great but expensive, heavy, and very cumbersome.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Any website for the Cass Creek Caller? I would be interested in learning more about them.

I bought a "Loudmouth" ecaller late last year. It has performed perfectly. It is a great caller. I use it for coyotes, fox as well as crows. Works great.

JS has a new RC-3 Remote coming out shortly for the JS-612, which is an updated version of the 512. If you want to stick with the cassettes and keep the cost down, you can probably send in your 512 and just have it set to handle the new remote. I just had an RC-2 Remote for sale in the classifieds for the JS-512. It sold right away though......

The new JS Bushwhacker Digital caller will be right at $300. Burnham Brothers new Compucaller-II is out now and is also $300. I saw it at BB's two weeks ago in action. It is also a great unit in that price range.

The Burnham Bros. is very easy to change out sounds in. It uses individual sound chips, one sound per chip. The remote is also very easy to use and to see. The JS Bushwhacker used sound cards with 4 sounds each and is also easy to change out. With the BB unit can pick which 4 sounds you want at any given time. With the JS you have to use the 4 sounds they put on that card. The JS comes with 2 sound cards which is 8 sounds. The BB comes with 4 chips which is 4 sounds. Both are going to be very good units at $300.

While I was house bound after my Hip Replacement Surgery last winter I needed a project to keep my busy. I decided to build a new Electronic Predator Caller. I had the MP3 Player with 14 Digital Calling Sounds on it (I bought Johnny Stewart Calling CD's, recorded the sounds to my Computer and ran them through Gold Wave Sound Editing Software to isolate one sound loop and clean up any unwanted noise). The sounds are :

1 - Coyote Locator
2 - Coyote Pup Distress
3 - Despirate Cries / Cottontail
4 - High Pitched Cottontail
5 - Cannine Puppies
6 - Distressed Housecat
7 - Meadowlark Distress
8 - Squealing Woodpecker
9 - Fawn Bleating
10 - Rodent Distress
11 - Coyote / Grey Fox Fight
12 - Coywolf Barks / Howls
13 - Lone Howl Locator
14 - Lone Coyote Challange

On a different forum I saw a photo of a caller a guy made. He had housed the speaker, amp and battery in an insulated coffee mug. I thought this was a great idea, especially in the cold winter months as the insulation should help keep the battery warm (or at least warmer than being outside).

Since I have a new digital camera to play with, I thought I'd show you guys what it looks like.

I am still waiting for a Voltage Regulator / Reducer so I can power the MP3 Player off of the 6 volt rechargeable battery. As it is currently the MP3 Player really eats up AA Batteries in short order.

Nope it's not a boughtend caller, nor does it have a remote. Rather it is a different approach to obtaining an E-Caller. All totaled I have about $150.00 invested in mine.

Have you guys heard anything about the Johnny Stewart PreyMaster Digital Caller. The guy at the Gander Mountain I went to made it out to be the next best thing in predator calling. Interested to hear your comments.
