Shooting the 280?
« on: April 07, 2004, 10:49:17 AM »
:D Does anyone shoot the long barrel 280. I was kind of interested in this barrel and was wondering how it shot, what's a good load, is it too long? :D

:D  I have a 280 synthetic , which I have not fired yet. I have cleaned the barrel and chamber and have started to firelap the barrel. The rifle hangs good , but I haven't mounted a scope yet. Length wise, it's about the same as a 22" bolt gun. I have all my components and dies, just waiting to smooth the barrel.
Shoot straight , shoot often.

I have a .280 Handi barrel that is now 19" long and is being morphed into a short barrelled "woods gun". So far I have had good luck with it, but it is LOUD!! at 19"....Gotta love those 7mm's, what a great choice of bullet weights and types!!!....<><....

I'm up to 55.5 grs. of Rel. 19 with a 139 gr. hornady, .008 off the lands and it seems the closer to the lands it get's, the better it shoots.
It shoots the Rem. green box at about 1.25" at !00yds.  It shoots the first 2 within .25" of each other and the next 2 do the same thing about 1" lower. I really like mine, and when I get it sorted out I'll chrono the loads.Digger

I have a 26" .280 Handi scoped w/ a Simmons 3 - 9 x 40 Pro Hunter scope. Due to the design of the short, brake open receiver it is no longer than most bolt rifles.  IMO it balances well and is easy to hold steady off hand.  I have only shot Remington Corelokt  .140 gr PSP ammo thru it so far with very good accuracy.  Right around 1-1/4" 5 shot groups from a makeshift rest over the seat of a 4 wheeler.  8)  Can't wait to get my hands on a press and set of dies to start reloading my empties. Like MSP said the choice in bullets for this caliber can't be beat.

Does anyone know why the .280 is offered in the 26" barrel and the .270 and 30-06 only come in 22".
