Gun cart is getting up-dated
« on: March 18, 2004, 11:12:36 AM »
I have one of those traditional carts with two wheels and a 4x4 post at the front.  Never did like tilting it when I moved it and got to look down the barrels of the rifle and shotgun.  Added a pair of 6 in wheels to each side of the post and this allowed me to roll it "flat," but rough ground still requred it to be tilted back (6" wheels too small for the really big bumps.)

I considered another pair of 16" wheels from Northern but the cast was pretty close to $50 with shipping and all.  And these would still have no "give" in them as they are hard tires.

So today I was at good old Tractor Supply and notice a 4 wheel garden wagon=$100.  Checked Home Depot=$75.  Fianlly Wal-Mart=$54.  The WM one is a bit smaller which is good (smaller is lighter.)

Right now have taken the wheels and post off the gun cart and it sits just about perfectly inside the wagon which has removable sides, too.  Since my brother is now cowboying I'm thinking of building another gun cart "top" for the wagon.  That way, when I shot by myself I have the little one and when we go together we have one that will hold all our long guns.  Something else to spend $$ on.

When I first started looking all I found was the big green ones.  Wal-Mart has two sizes.  The little one is 20x37 and not too bad to lift.  I'm making the gun cart part removeable so if worst comes to worst I can off load the wagon then add the gun cart part.  Right now the gun cart part is the same box from the other and a base with the rifle rack.  I can easily see 7 long guns (brother, me and maybe wife) so am making this one so it will hold 8   you never know.

The gun rack is double sided and runs from front to back rather than the "normal" across the cart.  Will get some pictures as soon as I have something more than a massive pile of little bitty pieces of lumber.

Spent the week making little pieces of wood out of long ones.  Got the base made that will fit inside the wagon base.  Also have completed the cross pieces for the rifle rack part to attach to.  The rifle rack will be removeable if needed.

The end pieces of the rifle rack are done as are the floor pieces, backs of the floors and the top piece where the rifle barrels will rest.  Had to cut these on a bit of an angle so the barrels would fit tight against the back of the cut outs.

Next is a bit of cleaning up of the parts and then assemblying the rack part.
