Unique Powder in 45-70
« on: March 23, 2004, 08:33:37 PM »
Someone here said they used Unique in the 45-70 with a 405 grain cast bullet. I found that data as well on a reloading site. Has anyone used that powder for the 300 grain Jacketed hollow point? If not what is a favorite anyone has for a mild load with the 300- 350 grain bullets. I want to calm it down until I need the Bear loads. :-)
shot placement is everything.

It was I that is using Unique powder with the 405-gr cast bullets getting great results I might add.  Really this is a very mild load that you would enjoy.  I don't use 300-gr or 350-gr bullets so I can't help you there, but iffin you want to use 405-gr 13.5 gr of Unique is what I would recomend

I was shooting some 405 cast ahead of 12.0 grains of Unique today. They were giving me extreme accuracy and 1080 fps. Much more fun to shoot than the 1600 fps loads I started out with.

I'm transplanted away from all my reloading equip. stuff for right now    but I think that 13.5 grain load of Unique is what I use for the 300 grain and 405 gr GasChecked bullets...same load for both. Both shoot very accurately and have very mild recoil. My favorite load for the 45-70.... :agree:

James B. ; I think I'm loading some of these 405 cast tonight, maybe by Sat. my shoulder will feel like it. I've put about 50 rds. through mine so far,and my shoulder is black. This is a first for me and I've been shooting for about 52 years. The 12 grs. of Unique sounds real good to me,and I'm ready for some fun rds.    Digger

Using 15.0 grains of Unique behind a 400-grain Speer FN gives very mild report and recoil, and okay accurady.  Velocity was only 1000 fps though.  However I perfer 17.0 grains of BlueDot for 1050 fps, much cleaner burning and much better accuracy.

With the kind of accuracy that I am getting from 13.5 gr of Unique with a 405-gr bullet at my hunting distances of 25, 50 and 100 yards, I will stick with this load.  3 shot group at 25 yards that you can cover the holes with a dime.  At 50 yards a 5 shot group that was just as impressive and a 6 shot group at 100 yards that equally as impressive.  These would be great for a postal match turn in.

Now, I just wish I had some hawgs to go hunt.
