I am sure that this has been beaten up here before.............what is the best value in a lever gun 357/38 that is legal for cowboy shooting. Thanks in advance. I might give this a try if I can get into it reasonably enough.

Best "value" Rossi, or what ever the import is being called now. Can be had for around $300. At least that's what I paid for my last one NIB.

I'm gonna disagree with my good pard, ButlerFord, and say the Marlin 1894C or Carbine. They can be found new for $400 or under and often under $300 used.

In general, the Marlin is more forgiving than the Rossi when using 38 special brass. Most of the reliable Rossis have been smithed, and that can cost around $100, so the makes the gun a bit pricey. Also, I think the Marlin has a faster resale potential.

Chocolate and vanilla, eh?

I would say that ButlerFord45 and Big Hext are both right (how's that for sitting on the fence?)!!

For cost value the Rossi-Puma-LSI (or whatever it is called now....) is very well priced, BUT......in the long-run the Marlin '94 is gonna do alot more for ya' if you are serious about Cowboy Action.

Probably one of the most competitive rifles going right now is the Marlin and they have a minimum of "action job" requirements. With a one-piece titanium firing pin installed and about 5,000 rounds down range, the rifle will "slick" itself up just fine.

So, it really is chocolate or vanilla....however, I would go with the Marlin........

I side with the Marlin for its competitiveness, resale value and ease of shadetree smithing. I've got a 73 that is very fast. But, as long as I load the Marlin with the proper length ammo, it is competitive against the 73 and half the price.
