Got the long one , will have to see how it shoots
« on: March 27, 2004, 11:34:32 AM »
I bought a 12" 357 Mod 66 and the thing is well finished and all of the mechanical functions are excellent. Good trigger pull, good lock  up on all 7 chambers and BCG of .003. Have to get out to the range and see how it shoots . I also inquired about the gun shop finding a 30 carbine model for me and they are looking. I really wanted one in 32 mag but you can down load the 30 C to 32 mag range or crank it up and be a lot louder than you want it to be, have a blackhawk in 30C.  I'll give you guys a report when I get out to shoot it .

The 30C is the large frame and probably havier than I wanted for a field gun. Do any of you have a 12" 357 Hunter? What has been your experience so far. Jim

Range report 357 Taurus Hunter

I got out and shot the hunter ,not real extensive just to get acquainted with the gun and test a few reloads. The pistol shot my normal accurate reload  very well. I did not take the chronograph but suspect it would not be anything earth shattering for velocity . I bought mine for it handling characteristics , the long nosed thing points well and feels good off handed . It shot 17.0/296/158 JHP very well 50 yard objects were not much of a challenge . 100 yard piece of wood about 10' in diameter required a little concentration to hit consistently but the same can be said about my 8 3/8 ' S&W's . The gun shot cast bullets at 1350 quite well with out leading the barrel up. The lock up and timing remained constant . The sights are first rate good square post and blade the appeared well defined , once you near 60 sharp is not a term you use regurarly. The front sight will get a little Mill Bastard adjustment because to sight the gun in for the 158 load you had to crank the rear sight higher than I like to see a blade out of the frame, probably 1/8" should do a lot to bring things back into the frame. It is a nice pistol for the price , mine cost 378.00, and very easy to shoot off hand ! piratical , maybe , fun to shoot definitely!

I also have one! and mounted a  Redfield ESD Multi on it. WOW!!! with the 3MOA dot @ 100 yds it covers a 6" target, as I bought it to hunt with that is fine enough . I can put 158 grainers into that 6" every shot.
I turn on the crosshair retical and at 50 yds I have 1 ragged hole off of a good rest.
I am now looking at getting a 218Bee with the 12"

Put 218 Bee and Taurus in your search engine and see what you get. I did that and came up with a gun shop that had one new for 345.00 + S&H .
What 357/158 load were you using for your groups? I have just started playing with mine and shot 17/296/158 JHP and seemed to group well but haven't done a lot of work with it. I put a set of Hogue rubber grips on mine , I have big hands and the factory grips were too small  to feel comfortable to me. I also am going to work on 140 gr loads some , I have quite a few of them . I may mount a low powered scope on mine to see how it shoots since the mount is easy to put on and I have an extra 2x arround.  E-mail me at jwstacy214@yahoo.com and lets keep up on the long project . I have also been looking at a wolf spring kit for mine to work the trigger a little more. Talk later. Jim
