Teacher exchange..
« on: January 02, 2024, 01:17:50 AM »
.
I have a couple friends, mother and daughter, both public school teachers.  THey had a conversation on FB, which may explain some of today's
problems in the educational system..  I'll label them mother & daughter..

    Daughter, Allison:

The amount of teachers who have texted me or posted on fb that they are so anxious, sick , and dreading going back to work tomorrow is the most I’ve ever seen . I wonder if people in other professions feel this way ? I don’t mean like “ oh boohoo  vacay is over “  but genuinely so stressed and anxious ..

  Mother, Karen:

And let’s face it, if we are being honest, it is much more about managing behaviors these days than teaching, and whatever abuse is thrown at us by students or parents Is our problem to handle.

 Daughter Allison:

.. And quite frequently, the blame is thrown on the teacher regardless of the history of the student or family.

   Mother, Karen:

Yes it’s all managing behaviors Ali .

I hope it provides some insight ! I rather doubt i would have their patience.. ;) ;D

There is a lot of truth in those ideas. It ain't easy running a classroom. Fortunately, most kids are just fine in class and fun to be with. Learning how to deal with disruption.....on the primary levels and on the secondary level is a process that may take years and is not taught in college, nor is it taught during student teaching. It is not mentioned in Bloom's Taxonomy....I know from observation that some teachers never acquire the skill. Classrooms, always hard work, are harder for them.

Yeah, I’m afraid most kids, the well behaved, are getting a less than optimal educations due to the problematic ones and the lack of proficient supervision, those educators afraid to respond to them. Then there are too many chiefs all afraid and or simply unwilling to get involved and support them. Our education system is way top heavy with management.

Many teachers admit that the administration...doesn't "have their backs".

What would fix schools is to get rid of teacher unions, where teachers are paid on their worth. Not what union leaders say they should be paid while holding tax payers hostage. Its no secret that the teacher union send a very large portion to the democratic party. the American Federation of Teachers increased their donations to the democratic party in 2020 by 3450 percent, and the NEA increased their donations by 38 percent. Most of the teachers union money goes to democrats instead of representing its own members. Im sure this has increased even more since the Biden regime is in office.

BINGO !    GHet the unions ioutoif the schools.  THe unions tend to concentrate on the teacher's bennies, rather than the students, while parent groups and civil rights groups look after parent's and certain group's rights..so where are the truly professional "educators" ?

It sure looks like th eindividual students and teachers are being overlooked in favor of 'groups'...

Historically, disruptive students were sent to "reform" schools..  Perhaps it is time to reinstitute such schools for the uncivilized ones.

Also, discipline also should go back to paddling, not just sending the kids home for 2-3 days.  First offense, paddle in the bathroom or the principles office.  Second, in front of class.  Make the kid feel embarrassed.  Less problems, less problems when adults.

The real threat by paddling, is not the "pain of the paddle', but the fact that other students KNOW the offender has been paddled. As chairman of the
board of a K-12 Christian school...I only paddled one disruptive lad.. Believe me, knowing it was a psychological exercise, I truly did "pull the
punches'.  The paddling was as I recall, just 3 light strokes.. the main discipline was that his cronies knew.

I agree paddling worked. If teachers started paddling again there would be an uproar from the majority of parents, because in most homes now, paddling is a no-no. When kids misbehave there has to be a consequence grave enough for them not to want to do it again. "Time outs" just don't do that.

Well now on that paddling, I have the following real world experience to offer.

In 5th grade, Mr. Mitchell was our teacher. He wasn't a real big man but prolly was near 6' tall and stoutly built with plenty of muscle to run that paddle. His paddle was a section of 1" by 4" board, cut to be comfortable on his hand and with holes drilled in the board. Not sure if they did anything.

There were a group of perhaps 10-12 boys in that class who did everything they could to get a paddling in front of the class. It was a competition to see who could get paddled the most. I sure wasn't part of that group.

He swung about as hard as he could and gave each five or so licks each time. I suppose the winner averaged more than one paddling a week, perhaps two or more all year long.

My thoughts are DUMBASS.

Yes I think in my case the whippings, not paddlings I got at home made me try to avoid them. But at my house avoidance wasn't really up to us, it just depending on the way my parents felt that day and how drunk they were.

I still do believe that parents and yeah maybe perhaps schools should bust a kid's butt from time to time if deserved. But from my personal experiences in life it really isn't the deterrent some think it is.

We have likewise experience...

On another note. In school when I lost my mind and engaged in fighting, that oh crap moment as I was being escorted to the office sucked. Those guys were sadists and would turn their paddle sideways to reduce air friction and flatten it on your ass at the last millisecond with their feet of the ground. Ahhh, memories...

I suppose with some, school paddlings didn't work. It was mostly your home life and discipline at home.  I never had the luxury of a time out at home growing up. It was dads belt, or moms washing stick used for the ringer washer.

I remember the middle school principle always wore a suit, and he always walked the halls with a narrow paddle tucked up his sleeve with the end of it cradled in his palm.  the guy literally looked like a gorilla, and I think waited for the opportunity to paddle misbehaved kids.  In swimming gym class. the teacher would stand you on the edge of the pool in your wet swim trunks and whack you with a wooden paddle hard enough to send you into the pool if you disrupted his class. A large majority of kids wanted nothing to do with punishment from the principle or the gym teacher, so I would say that paddling deterred most kids in school from doing bad things.
One other teacher I had was an old lady that taught english class. If you disrupted her class she would walk back with this wooden paddle that was about 8 inches long. She would make you hold your hand out and she would proceed to whack the back of your hand a number of times with this small paddle. If she felt your disruption was bad enough you went out in the hall and got the big stick across your backside.  I still say paddling worked better than any time out ever did, in disciplining kids.  When I was a kid. I and other kids respected authority. In todays world not so much.

I didn't get the paddle while in school, but  I did get cuffed side of my head a couple times..  :D ;D

There is a sequel to the paddling I administered to that boy ! First off, I want to point out that since it was a Christian school, it wasn't a matter of
   Just "laying on the wood"..

When I took the lad (named Buddy) aside, as per practice, I explained carefully why he was in such a situation.. then i administered the paddle.

Following that, we prayed together..then he went back to his classroom..

Years later, when my eldest grandson was in high school, and I was taking him to kick boxing training, I also took him to competitions.
One multiple dojo competition was i Erie PA.

As i made acquaintance with competitors and their senseis...I ran into Buddy there...  It seems that after school, Buddy trained hard in Karate
and was a sensei, with 3-4 black belts .... and his own dojo.

Incidently...Buddy was a Roman Catholic, attending a Baptist high school..
