scope mount ?
« on: March 25, 2004, 05:31:34 PM »
I have the 454 RB.  I am using the Taurus scope mount system in  stainless steel.  There are 3 plates that go under the ventilated rib.  How tight should the screws be?   Taurus is now replacing the bent plates.  The screws pulled the threads out of the plates & made the holes larger.  I'm thinking of getting longer screws & putting a lock nut on them.  Any body having similiar problems & a solution.   Thank you Dave

I would call Taurus and ask them if they would be willing to give you some/sell you some new plates. I didn't tighten mine to the point of bending or stripping mine, adn I have had Zero problems with them. just remember to alternate tightening screws until all are flush.
Cheers,

Thank you for the reply.  I talked to Taurus & they don't sell the plates. They're sending me the entire mounting system under the lifetime warranty program.  I'll call them when the mount comes in  & see how much torque I should put on them.    Dave

See my post above. Gun shot in Columbia SC said that Weaver makes a mount the goes in your rear sight slot.

Hi. 140
My mount is #10-031  It may be in stock or I'm getting the business like you.  They said they were sending it but didn't say what year.  Try E-bay

The gun shop I talked about was Shooter's Choice 944 Sunset Blvd
West Columbia , SC . They have one on the rack I think it's a 6.5" 454 ? You could call them and see . 803-791-5498 . They have been decent to deal with . I have my mount on my 6.5" tightened down until the plates bend slightly and it is strong enough to put a trailer hitch on . Hasn't moved since I installed . I would not tighten more than a very slight bend or you will miss align the holes and stip them . i have seen this on other mounts so i know it does happen. Good luck Jim.

Hi Jim thanks for the reply.    Taurus  is sending me the mount on warranty.    I'll try the slight bend method when it arrives.     Dave

I ordered the 10-027 mount for my 44mag about 10 minutes before reading this thread.   I am happy to say that I just received the package Fed Ex 5 days after I called in the order.  I like the idea of not having to drill/tap my gun, but hope it holds up and to the recoil.  I expected a stainless steel finish, but it's a dull aluminum, almost gray in color.  The gun is stainless and the scope is stainless, color.  I'm going to try to polish up the mounst and see what it looks like.  I have a buffing wheel to try as well as Flitz which might work.  Otherwise, I'll just mount it as is.  $54 is enough for a piece of aluminum, but it could be alot worse I guess.
I wish the rest of you waiting good luck w/ Taurus.  I have an 8 shoit 357 and the stainless 44 and both guns are very nice.

price for the Taurus mount seems to be in the $55-$65 dollar range everywhere. Try Midway, they may have them in stock.  I have 2 of them--one on a 480 the other on a 454--just snug them down--they never come loose. Sounds like someone is over tightening them. The integral base on my Tasco Pro-Point V rattled loose-- the answer for me is to replace the cross bolts with steel machine screws and throw the aluminum bolts away.

I ordered a mount on the warranty program & got it back in 4 weeks.  Things must be getting better at Taurus.  Dave
