Father Brown
« on: February 07, 2024, 06:54:43 AM »
I am putting this hear because most any thing that involves churches gets tossed here eventually.

The Brits had/have a show called Father Brown it involves a Priest who solves crimes.
There were two versions: One from 1974 that lasted one year and one from 1993 that is still airing.

The original was more like Colombo, although the murderer is not known, he solves murders, using his mind, and the show is not based on special effect schlock. (British shows have a totally different style than those from the U.S. and the early ones were on a tight budget, compared to later version.)

At that, one thing in Father Brown, the fact the Father is a preacher is never left behind, the state of one's soul, and who the Father serves is NEVER an after thought in the early version, with it actually preaching Christian Faith at times.
Although, in one episode the Father asks a woman if her -- late -- husband was RC, and she says no, he was a Presbyterian, and the preachers eyes get big and goes: OH, in a funny way.

Now the later one has a larger budget and is more light hearted, with a cast of supporting characters that are not in the first version, but even at that the preacher main character ALWAYS puts his duty as a Roman Catholic Priest serving God, over his crime solving skills.
Some thing you NEVER see in U.S. TV shows any more.

In the Fifties, even to the early Seventies, how God is part of life was often mentioned to the point of preaching .
I saw the first episode of The Rifleman, last week and while it was far darker show than later years, the Rifleman used the story of Job to explain to his son how God works things out in the end.

Watching tv shows from 50 or more years ago, drastically shows how this country and Europe have lost their faith  that once was strong. :(

Watching TV shows, fifty or more years apart also shows how acting styles have changed, drastically at times.
Some times the over acting is apparent enough to make one laugh.

  If any TV show presents that Jesus is God, come to seek and to save... that is good news.  It may provoke some of the unsaved to seek further
     enlightenment.. Far more positive than most of TV today.

     As a child, during WW2..(before the age of TV)...soap operas were on radio.  My mother used to listen to them as she went about her daily tasks.

  I can still recall the titles oif some, and the thrust of their programming..

   Operas such as, Portia faces life, Ma Perkins, Just Plain Bill, David Harum, Our Gal Sunday...among others.  Most were set in an everyday arena,
   with average peiople, working their way through problems..life, death, marriage, financial and spiritual.

   Where they differed from what apparently today's soaps present, is in the wholesome messages back then, as compared to today.

     ..As memory serves me, in the oldies, people were always looking for the more decent, noble and Godly answers to their problems ..

  God was referred to often and sometimes scripture quoted.

  There seems to be at least one of the old soap opera titles, still in use.  That one is called "The Guiding Light"..

    Back then , the "guiding light" was of course God. (I am the nlight of the world..Jesus)

    Of course, I don't know what today's version is like, since I have had no time for the soaps since back then as a small boy.

I take it you don't see the problem. Jesus is not God, he is the son of God . which means you are promoting a deception even a  lie used to mislead  .

  I could cite Hebrews 1:6-9)
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      "6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says:
“Let all the angels of God worship Him.”
7 And of the angels He says:
“Who makes His angels spirits
And His ministers a flame of fire.”
8 But to the Son He says:
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

   ..And I could go on with (Hebrews 1:10-13)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
       "6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says:
“Let all the angels of God worship Him.”
7 And of the angels He says:
“Who makes His angels spirits
And His ministers a flame of fire.”
...But Locust would still not "get it" since he is thoroughly indoctrinated.  However, for anyone else who may question the diety of Jesus, it is
    worthwhile information.   ..And I will take any opportunity to break forth with the truth.
  If you are interested..go ahead and read all of Hebrews....then go to the gospels.
Have watched and read some of the Father Brown series and enjoyed both. Don't know if it was the old or new TV series since we don't have access to TV reception and haven't for years. Don't miss it either.
i see you are confused  as to what ''worship'' is  (Hebrews 1:6). you should understand it to mean Homage it means to give great respect and honor. to see it its much like obeisance ,meaning to bowdown before him,it could look like worship or worshiping .  if one does not understand/picture whats happening .
  Most reliable translations, such as the KJV, NKJV, ESV, NASV..etc are reliable, taking into account modern language idiom.
  However, few "translations" take such literary liberties as your NEW WORLD TRANSLATION does, in order to keep members malinformed.
  Here is th ecited text in your NWT;
1  Long ago God spoke to our forefathers by means of the prophets on many occasions and in many ways.+ 2  Now at the end of these days he has spoken to us by means of a Son,+ whom he appointed heir of all things,+ and through whom he made the systems of things.*+ 3  He is the reflection of God’s glory+ and the exact representation of his very being,+ and he sustains all things by the word of his power. And after he had made a purification for our sins,+ he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.+ 4  So he has become better than the angels+ to the extent that he has inherited a name more excellent than theirs.+
5  For example, to which one of the angels did God ever say: “You are my son; today I have become your father”?+ And again: “I will become his father, and he will become my son”?+ 6  But when he again brings his Firstborn+ into the inhabited earth, he says: “And let all of God’s angels do obeisance to him.”*
7  Also, he says about the angels: “He makes his angels spirits, and his ministers*+ a flame of fire.”+ 8  But about the Son, he says: “God is your throne+ forever and ever, and the scepter of your Kingdom is the scepter of uprightness.* 9  You loved righteousness, and you hated lawlessness. That is why God, your God, anointed you+ with the oil of exultation more than your companions.”+ 10  And: “At the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands. 11  They will perish, but you will remain; and just like a garment, they will all wear out, 12  and you will wrap them up just as a cloak, as a garment, and they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never come to an end.”+
13  But about which of the angels has he ever said: “Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies as a stool for your feet”?+ 14  Are they not all spirits for holy service,*+ sent out to minister for those who are going to inherit salvation?
  Let's compare the NKJV, in verse #8 ;
  8 But to the Son He says:
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
  How your NWT says verse #8;
    8  But about the Son, he says: “God is your throne+ forever and ever, and the scepter of your Kingdom is the scepter of uprightness.* 9  You loved righteousness, and you hated lawlessness. That is why God, your God, anointed you+ with the oil of exultation more than your companions.”
   Very subtle differences...starting with "But about the Son, he says:"  in place of, " But to the Son He says"
    Just inserting "about" in place of "to"...changes the whole discussion and meaning
  Notice how most reliable vcersions (except the NWT) phrase verse #8 the same way..saying " But to the son He says".
  Compare most versions here:  https://www.biblestudytools.com/hebrews/1-8-compare.html
  oh, I get it. You are trying to make Jesus into God but the NWT does not promote that concept of your god that you ''want'' to believe in. ok, in America, you can believe what you want when it comes to religion . I'm going to be of the opinion that God gets to decide what he likes
