Getting low on H4895-What has anyone else tried-.308
« on: February 19, 2024, 12:07:39 PM »
Few years back bought an 8# of the H4895 when C.Perry was in full bloom. Well, started shooting more .308, 169gr and trying some 178gr. Well, the keg is getting low, and that one has been pretty scarce. So did some checking on other forums, and AA2495 is mentioned. Anybody else use it, or something that might be a little more available as a substitute? Not looking for speed, accuracy more than anything else.

I've used W748, AA2520, RL15,
and H4895 in 308w with 150gr
projectiles, and in 223 and 30/30.
Hard to load any of those wrong.
I have some 308's loaded with TAC but
haven't put enough of em downrange
to make a judgment yet

I should add that unlike the
majority in 2024, I don't look
for velocity first. If it's not
accurate, speed doesn't mean
doodley scoot to me

Varget if you can find it.

I've not done much loading for .308 but I seem to recall that was my main powder for it.

Varget if you can find it. . .

Key words ^ ^ ^ ^

I never tried to work any loads up
with varget for anything I shot because
it was scarce here from day one.
I don't recall seeing any around here
for a couple of years at least, but then
I've not specifically looked for any,
only casually looked over the available
selection when I've been buying.
It is supposed to be a top drawer powder

Don't know about .308, but I've always liked H414 for 30-06.  MOA or a little better with Sierra 165 btsp.

H335 gave me an accurate 308 load in a hunting rifle using cheap Speer 150 grain bullets. I've since scored an 8# jug of IMR 4895, which is my preferred powder for anything it works in (most of my rifles).

Gypsyman,

W748, H4895, IMR4320,  and AA2230 are some that I keep around for 308 as well a some other calibers.

I did a little looking and found you a 8# of AA2230 here at MidSouth:
(In Stock as I type this)

https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item/00079pb223008/accurate-nopoint-2230-smokeless-powder-(8-lbs)

While I don't usually buy 8# jugs each time, what I did a while ago is pick up 2-3 smaller jugs, IF/WHEN they are/were available, just to have the smaller containers to fill from the larger ones should I buy one. So, as a suggestion to you , due to the market right now, you might try to pick up some of the smaller sizes just to have some around & to try them out.
Then, when you try each of them & find one or two that suits you as an alternative in times such as these, instead of having just one type, you have more choices to choose from that you have tried out.

Kind of like trying a different type of beer or soda pop. Get a single or a six pack before ya buy a case or a 8 gallon keg to try it & see if ya like it. Just like trying out a new "flavor", you can do the same with the powders. Once ya find out whether ya like a certain powder, if it is unavailable, you can go with an alternative.

Getting 1-2 jugs of powder of a few different types up to 8 or so bottles is about the same hazmat & shipping as getting just one 8 pounder, so the cost should be similar, even though smaller bottles are usually just a little more each than the bulk jugs.

Well, I tried to help & tried to explain my thinking. the way I tried to explain suits me even if it doesn't suit others.

G'Luck~! whatever ya decide to do.
:)

JB, made perfect sense. I live 20 miles from Camp Perry, and set up on commercial row there for about 20 years. Back in the ''good old days'', I could walk down commercial row, get a lb. or 2 of a powder, go to my gun club after loading a few rounds, see what kind of groups I could get. Find something that worked, by at least an 8lbr, always checked to see if it was the same lot number, and was good for a couple years. Well, those days are gone. And yes, am going to try a few different powders. I've got enough Bullseye for a while, bet have several lbs of AA No. 5 ordered. Lets hope for better days!!
