I understand this is the last year of the Remington Classic. Can anyone confirm this? It has become my favorite Remington model in recent years. I'll really be sorry to see it fall by the wayside. Best wishes.

That is correct. The info is on Remington's site, 2005 and the .308 Win. end it.

It was due to happen. They were really fishing for calibers the last 7-8 years. .221 Fireball...............8MM Mauser?
Not knocking those two particularly, but they had already done the best classic calibers, .375 H&H, .280 Rem. .350 Mag, .300 Weatherby, I believe, .300 Savage, .222......you get the picture. I mean what was next the .30-06? And the quality had slipped, I had a .223 briefly, but the metal was not a subtle matte type , but was mostly semi-finished, rough, and dull. The stock was a piece of balsa wood, and the forearm was thin and rounded on the left side of the barrel, and thick and squarish on the right side. This is viewed from the top, looking out past the receiver ring. Only Remington I ever got rid of for lack of quality.
Then along come the CDL...........

Yup, looks like they've dumped it. That's the problem with listing a link rather than the info, folks change their site up and the link dies. As far as I know I didn't record the info anywhere just the link.

When was the Classic first offered? In the very first years, it was made is several calibers. I have an 06 receiver that came off one before they began making just one caliber per year.

I found a list of almost every gun that was made. Go to Google, type in Wikipedia List of Firearms. I've never seen so many guns listed with a narritive about each one.

I believe the new classic is now the CDL-SF. I just received a magazine with Remington's 2008 new products. In it Remington is offering the .260 Remington with a 24 inch Fluted stainless barrel. 2007 was the 17 fireball and 2006 was the 30-06 centennial. Might have to get one if quality control has improved.

I wonder why they do not list the .270 Winchester? I used to own one. 700 Classic and it came with iron sights.

It's curious.

I listed every caliber from the Remington 700 list, that was notated as having been a Classic caliber, along with the year Remington says it was - yet some obvious calibers and years are missing.

The Remington site says: "Classic ( 1978 – Present)", and yet no calibers listed as "Classic" are earlier than 1981, and both the .30-06 & .270 are missing the "Classic" annotation on Remington's Model 700 caliber list.

Classics were made in several calibers each year when first introduced. I had one in 30-06. I'm certain the 270 was offered then as well. Later Remington went to one caliber per year for the Classic.

There is, for the fist time, Remington Classic rifle information consolidated in one place by a writer who researched Remington's records/factory codes, and several other sources (quoted in the article).

The information is in the 2008 Gun Digest, in the article " The Remington 700" by Steve Gash.
It's actually two separate articles, "Part I" being about history and production details, "Part II" about each caliber- and both cover the Model 700 Classic in detail, going back to the 1917 Enfield.

It seems there are the early M-700 Classics, and then there were the later M-700 Limited Edition (LE) Classics - and that distinction is what is missed by many, adding to the confusion about the model.

The "regular production" 700 Classic debuted in 1978 in 7 calibers: .22-250,.243, 6mm,.270,.280, 7mm Mag, & .30-06 - and was just another model, ala ADL/BDL/Mountain/etc.
Of these, only the .280 was later made in the Limited Edition Classic.

The LE Classic series was started in 1981, and ran for 25 years as a one-caliber-per-year model, but it turns out that some rifles were shipped both before and after the year of their production - again, adding confusion.
example: 1982 - Besides the .257R, that year's caliber, one 7x57was also shipped; in 1987, besides the .338 Win Mag, there were three .35 Whelan's (1988) shipped, plus 42 more in 1989.

Additionally, each year/caliber in the LE series was supposed to have a certain production total, but in fact the production totals varied widely, from 1,479 .308's (1985) to 10,779 .300 Weatherby's (1989) - with no two years being the same.

I do not know if this is meant to take place of the Classics but they have a "Special Edition" 700 CDL SF out in .260. I have had one for a few days and it is a beautiful rifle. After a quick sight in, it shot 1/2 inch groups with reloads. With the long 24 inch barrel being fluted, the weight has been kept down. In my opinion this is very close to the ideal Texas whitetail rifle. The only problem is the "lawyer" 4lbs 12oz. trigger.

I still have a classic in 6mm. It was made before they became limited run guns. Id dearly like to find a 257 roberts but when i find them for sale the owners seem to be pretty proud of them.

Remington model 700 Classic's are my favorite rifles, I absolutely love them! I bought my first 700 Classic in 1990 it was a 25-06 Rem. I traded it in 1997 for a 280 Classic which is my favorite rifle of all time. . . . .great rifle in a great cartridge. I had a chance to buy a 1994 6.5x55, but ended up being the middle man when one of my friends bought it through me from another friend. It was new in the box for $400. I kick myself every time I think of that. Someday I hope to get a nice used 700 Classic in 308 Win. and 35 Whelen. Maybe even another 25-06 Rem. I like the 700 CDL's too, they're growing on me. I like the nice clean plain wood!

I have an old 30-06 from the days when the Classic was first produced in about six calibers. Was a great rifle, but one day it would not shoot a good group. Gunsmith pulled the barrel and made me a 280 Ackley Improved. It now has a 26" Shilen match barrel, blueprinted, trigger work, all the accuracy stuff, and is too heavy to carry. Went from a great rifle, to a safe queen with an additional cost.
Wish I still had my Rem Classic.
