Was looking at an older pair of nikon 8x40 binoculars, was told that they were monarchs. Would you know if the new 8x42 monarchs are better binoculars than the older ones? Thanks for any info.

The new Nikon Monarch are phase-coated and the old ones are not. The newer Monarchs are going to give you better constrast. I would take the new one if it was me.

Interesting you say that because I looked through both year models recently. At first glance, you kinda can't tell, but if you focus on an object, you can tell a difference (not a big difference, but a difference nonetheless.)

I think that the new Nikon Monarch Binos are a great value.

The older Monarchs or ATB's are also lighter and don't have the "nice" eyecups, but they are still very usable.
