44 Mag loads.
« on: March 30, 2004, 04:20:50 PM »
I tookm the chrony out with some 44 mag loads today. Speed test only. I didn't have time to shoot for groups. I loaded some 240 Grain cast bullets that were really fun to shoot. I used 8.0 grains of Unique got 1178, 1191 and 1216 fps. pretty consistent I loaded 11.3 grains of Unique behind the Hornady XTP 200 grainer and got 1543, 1541, and 1548 fps. Real consistent load. Pretty light recoil. I was going for a small game to medium game load with these bullets. These in my new NEF 44 Mag synthetic rifle.  I loaded some sierra 55 Grain HP Pro hunter bullets for the 223 NEF 23.5 grains IMR 3031 and got 2916, 2900, and 2941. OCL 2.210. All these loads came from my Reloading manuals. Please double check in your manuals and work up to these loads. In my Rifles none of these loads showed any sighn of excess pressure.   My Last load was for the 45-70 looking for a less than Grizzly load with the 300 grain Hornady.  44 Grains of IMR 3031 and got 1485, 1553 and 1568 fps. This shows a little inconsistency probably not enough powder as this was about in the lower fourth of the Trapdoor Data in the old Hornady Manual. The first shot was from a clean cold barrel. Again check your Manuals before you try thses tloads in your guns.
shot placement is everything.
