CNN’s Anderson Cooper has built his reputation on being a trusted news anchor — not a pundit, which he explained during his show on Thursday.

During a frank conversation on how the news — and CNN — has covered the presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, Cooper defended his network to The Breakfast Club‘s Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Rye. He also defended himself from criticism that he got from Harris supporters after Wednesday’s town hall with the VP.

After the animated conversation turned to how Harris was questioned about her policy and the double standard when it came to how Trump was questioned about his — or his lack thereof, as Cooper explained — Charlamagne said: “What you just did is what I would like to hear more pundits do.”

That raised Cooper’s hackles, because his response to Charlamagne was: “I’m not a pundit.” He explained further:

Cooper: I believe in asking questions and probing people’s arguments and trying to reveal people’s arguments, what’s true and what’s not. And I like — I’m not on MSNBC for a reason. I’m not on some other network for a reason. I’m on CNN, because I want to talk to Republicans. I want to talk to Democrats. And I want to learn from them. I don’t think I have the answers. I’m willing to change my mind. People can convince me of stuff all the time. Like, I’m not a — I don’t even know why I’m talking about myself!

    [Charlamagne laughs]

Rye: But Anderson, I want to tell you this.

Cooper: I think what we’re doing here is important —

    Rye: It is so important.

Cooper: Because I do think in this country where, you know what? I got so many… I don’t look at comments about myself, but I was looking up some comments about my grief podcast, and I came across this whole inundation from people who are Harris supporters saying to me online today like, “How dare you? What a betrayal that you would ask her these questions.”

    Charlamagne: That was your job.

Cooper: And I’m like, you misunderstand what my job is. I’m not on MSNBC or — and no disrespect, what they do is, they’re very talented. But it’s I don’t watch it. I’m not interested in watching what these overpaid, blow-dried anchors think. And I include myself in that overpaid/blow-dried. Although I don’t blow dry. I am overpaid. But I don’t want, I’m not interested in the anchor’s opinion. I’m interested in facts and letting the viewers make up their own mind. So, anyway, I’m sorry this devolved into something else.

Rye then explained to Cooper why he, of all anchors, was looked to by so many during such an unprecedented campaign:

I will just say in this moment, some of what we’re talking about tonight, Anderson, is not actually an opinion at all. It is just the facts. And you are one of the most trusted voices on television. And it is important in those moments where you know those conversations devolve into nonsense, particularly on the other side of the aisle. They’re conspiracy theory. They won’t even say her name right. That has to be checked in the moment because that is what fascism looks like. That is how we start sliding down a very slippery slope. And we cannot afford to be here. The election is 12 days away and this should not be even what is on the ballot. But democracy’s on the line. That is not a partisan issue. It is the truth. And I think that’s what’s important for cable news networks in particular, to be saying whether you’re on Fox, you’re on CNN, or you’re on MSNBC. For all of us, that is our responsibility and our patriotic duty.

Charlamagne closed the conversation: “And now that I know you can literally call BS, I want to hear it more.”

The part I underlined is the last remark by the liberal broad proving she has no idea what Cooper really was saying.

I suggest, perhaps more accurately, that Cooper, seeing how the Kamel has slipped...has decided that she is washed up, so he can be more candid
    and truthful.
IMO...that in no way implies that he is normally an unbiased figure, as he is trying to pretend.  He, like other fake news venues, hung with her as long as he could.

Plus, I doubt he wants to be associated with Commie-La's desperate, Hitler/dictator" talk..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

IMHO, this is the way a News.org should operate........News journalists should just do that. Give us the news. Not their version of it.
A Pundit is a so called expert in a particular subject or field who is frequently called on to give opinions about it to the public. (NOT A NEWS ANCHOR) Political personalities should be given equal time to explain themselves, with pundits having equal time to go after them.

The alphabet's..... Fox, MSNBC, CNN, ABC,CBS,NBC, NM, (News Max should give equal time to both sides of a political belief. NOT choose sides and inject their personal beliefs and views, or the beliefs of their owners.
Journalists should be unbiased. Something that is not currently done. They are all guilty of it!

The only journalists left today are the local news people, and they are even biased at times.

Freedom Of Speech.....Once we lose it, every other freedom will follow.
