AR's for varmints?
« on: February 09, 2004, 08:52:02 AM »
How many of you are using AR's for varmints? I use a few different loads for mine depending on what I am going after (coyotes, prarie dogs, etc.) but I am thinking of selling my bolt guns because NONE of them will outshoot my Bushmaster. Anybody else have the same kind of accuracy out of theirs that I am getting?
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

My bushmaster shorty will hold 3 of the winchester white box 45grn hp in an inch at 100yds. Thats with the factory trigger. My browning 22-250 thinks i died. Never even broke it out his year. The bushie got all the fun.

I have a Colt with a 24" stainless bull barrel and flat top reciever.  I use it for calling coyotes and prairie dogs as well.

I just started reloading for it and am getting decent accuracy with Nosler 55 grain Ballistic Tip bullets and BLC2 powder.  I still have a lot of tweaking and testing to do, but even with factory rounds, I've always gotten good accuracy out of my AR.

Haven't used mine for hunting yet. But last time I had my Bushmaster Varminter out to the range I was sighting in with Federal XM-193 ammo. Ave of three-three shot groups at 200 meters was 1.4 " with the best group under 1".
I haven't put 100 rounds through this gun yet , so it should get even better.
I'm very pleased.
