Crosman Corp Air Rifle Recall
« on: March 31, 2004, 04:43:03 PM »
Washington, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Crosman Corporation, of East Bloomfield, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling approximately 1,500 spring-piston, break-action air rifles. The air rifles can discharge unexpectedly when the user closes the barrel, posing a serious risk of injury to consumers and bystanders.

Crosman Corporation has received one report of an air rifle unexpectedly firing, though no injuries have been reported. The recall break-action, spring-air rifle includes Crosman Model numbers RM177, RM177X, RM677, RM677X, RM877 and RM622 that were produced before August 2001. Models produced afterwards are not included in this recall. The recall air rifles have brown wood stocks, black barrels and blue and white striped spacers on the butt plate. The RM622 shoots .22 caliber air gun pellets; the other models shoot .177 caliber air gun pellets. The RM177X and RM677X were sold with scopes. Each barrel is imprinted with the model number and the words "Manufactured for Crosman Corp. by Mendoza."

Authorized dealers, gun shops and sporting good dealers nationwide sold the air rifles from June 2001 through August 2001 for between $130 and $250. Consumers should top using these air rifles immediately and contact Crosman Corporation at 1-800-724-7486 between 8 am and 4:30 pm ET Monday through Friday for instructions on returning the rifle for a free repair or replacement with a comparable model. Crosman will also reimburse consumers for the cost of shipping.

Consumers can log on to the company's Web site at www.crosman.com to view safety information. To see a picture of the recalled item, use link: www.cps.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtm104/04001/html

This is getting to be a sort of an urban legend. It come up every couple of months as something new. Crosman announced this recall in Sept 2001. The total number of guns suspected to have a "defect" is somewhere near 8, maybe less. The original release specifies that less than 1/2 of one percent of the 1500 guns that the recall applies to may be defective, and only one incident has occurred. It's more like Crosman is covering their butt after the Daisy debacle than a real safety problem.

OWNERS OF CROSMAN MODELS RM177, RM177X
RM677, RM677X, RM877 AND RM622

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE
September 2001
We have recently discovered a potential safety problem with Model numbers RM177,RM177X, RM677, RM677X, RM877 and RM622 spring air rifles. These break-action air rifles were sold between June 2001 and August 2001.

Testing has shown that less than ½ of 1 percent of these rifles may have the potential to discharge unexpectedly as the user closes the action after cocking the rifle.
If the air rifle discharges unexpectedly while pointed at an individual, there is a risk of serious personal injury. Please stop using your rifle and call us at 1-800-724-7486 or 585-657-6161 so that we can make arrangements for you to return your rifle to us for repair. We will pay for the costs of shipping and for the repair.
We appreciate your assistance and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

October 2003 UPDATE:
In October 2003, Crosman issued a joint announcement with the Consumer Protection and Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding this same matter. Crosman had notified consumers and retailers of this issue in September 2001, and to date we have retrieved the great majority of these airguns. Please note that the October 2003 CPSC press release refers to this same voluntary recall and does not involve any additional air rifles.
