Questions on SKS
« on: January 22, 2004, 12:26:48 AM »
Hello forum members:

I have a couple of questions related to the SKS:

1.  What is the best way you have found to carry the 10 round stripper  clips?  I do not like the across-the-chest chinese bandoleer I have seen advertised.  I would prefer an ammo pouch.

2.  How does an aftermarket 30 round magazine affix to the rifle?  Does it just pop in?  Does a pin have to be removed?

Thanks in advance,
gary

Type 99,
I cannot answer the clip modification question. However, when I owned and used a Chinese SKS, I used to carry 2 SKS stripper clips with ammo in the old large cell phone belt holders. Probably hard to find now, but also probably free if you do. Worked well for the M-1 carbine 10 round stripper clips also, but these were loose whereas the SKS clips and ammo fit perfectly.

I always just carry a couple of stripper clips in the pocket of my coat  as for the  30 rnd. clip you have to remove the 10 rnd magazine and the 30 rnd clip has a "nose piece" that hooks in first and you just roll the clipin and it latcheson the standard mag release. OH YEAH!! make shure you are holding the bolt back(open) as it has to pass through the ears on the clip. If you try to put in a clip or take out the clip with the bolt closed you WILL bend the ears making the clip useless without repairs. the 30 rnd clip will also accept the strippers just fine.
The 30 rnd clip seems a bit much for me . I tried them,(got two free when a guy tried to install them with the bolt closed!)But they are alittle bulky when hunting. just my $0.02 :money:
Sorry! I forgot. You have to disassemble the rifle to remove the 10 rnd mag . you reassemble the rifle sans mag, and then you can "pop"in the 30 rnd mags.
gun controll is hitting your target!!

Putting in a detachable mag may be illegal, depending on a lot of stuff.  If it never had a detachable mag and it's in stock configuration, it would be illegal to put a detachable mag in it.

If you're using this for hunting, per the forum you chose to ask it in, one magazine full should be enough for a hunting trip.  If it's not enough, you either really stink or are trying to kill too many animals at once.  Your state will likely have a magazine capacity limit.  My state does not, but it does not allow semi-auto rifles for hunting either.
