What Is Your Favorite Obsolete......
« on: April 06, 2004, 12:14:32 PM »
My favorite obsolete cartridge that I grab whenever I head out to check property lines is my old M94, 24 inch octagon barreled .32 Winchester Special.  Buckhorn sights, a metal butt plate but it's an old friend(got it when I was 17) that just feels right.  Goes into the scabbard on horse back, on my ATUV or in my jeep.  My new second favorite is my Win. M71 .348.  What have you got hidden in your safe that you take out when no one can see?  Lawdog

This doesn't fire an obsolete cartridge but it's an obsolete firearm.

It's my Winchester model 97 12 gauge shotgun. It has a full choke and has only been used on an occasional trap shoot.
This was purchased new in 1956 and it's still in like-new condition.
I use my Rem. 870's for hunting only because I don't want to get the old 97 banged-up.
Guess it's kinda dumb not using it, but it's the only "new" old timer I've got.

How old am I anyway? I have both a Model 71 in .348 (had 2!) and 2 (3?) original Model 97's in 12 Gauge. One take down, full choke, 32 inch barrel and 1 (2?) short barrelled old riot guns, no handguard or bayonet lug though.  Got me thinking now, haven't looked in the back of that closet in years, I think I had 2 short barreled Model 97's....<><....

7x57mm Mauser
300 H&H Mag
500 Jeffery
32-20 Win

Having a 275 H&H built.

I like the older chamberings.  Nothing really new when you get right down to it.

The 30-06. It needs a long action, it's old, and it doesn't have short or ultra magnum in it's name.    It's obsolete by all of today's standards. Ok, ok, today's standards suck and aren't realistic.  :)

Among others, I shoot:

6mm Remington
.250 Savage
7X57
7.62X39
.303 British
.303 Canadian Epps Belted Magnum
8X57
.35 Remington
.358 Winchester
.35 Whelen
.358 Norma

and I don't consider any of them to be "obsolete".  They're just not heavily used. :D

M92 Winchester rifle (24" octagon barrel) in .38-40, bought brand, spankin', new by my grandpa in 1913.  Stock is scarred from bein' carried in a saddle scabbard, but bore is unpitted and shiny, and the old gun hits where you're lookin'.
Careful is a naked man climbin' a bobwire fence.

I know this don't fall in the medium bores category, but I couldn't resist. My favorite obsolete cartridge is my 1899-H in 22 Hi-Power. Awesome little round and a lot of fun to shoot.

My favorite obsolete cartridge...

would have to be the .405Winchester. I've got this in an Encore, a Ruger #1, and an 1895Winchester. I skipped the recent Winchester High Wall in this cartridge because I don't like the crescent buttplate and it's a little gaudy for my taste.

It isn't obsolete by any stretch of the imagination, but it is darned old - the .45-70. I guess I just have a thing for old cartridges. I like the .22 Hornet, 6.5 Swede, .30-06, .30-30, 8mm Mauser.303 British, 7.65 Argentine and 7.62 X 54R, among others. These cartridges are timeless.
