260 barrels??
« on: May 24, 2004, 04:12:17 PM »
Has anyone tried the 260 barrel on either the rifle or pistol? I am thinking of that caliber both in a handgun hunting barrel and a longer rifle barrel. Thanks!!
shot placement is everything.

James,

I've used the 260 rifle barrel for five years.  I've had excellent accuracy (3/4" groups at 100 yards) with Speer Nitrex 140 grain Grand Slams.  I've also loaded 100 grain Noslers (ballistic tips and partition) using H4350 and have gotten the same level of accuracy.  I have taken 6 deer with the 140 grainers, but haven't tried the 100 grain loads on anything larger than coyote.  Five of the deer dropped in their tracks, the sixth went 20 yards.  Recoil is very mild.  You will love the 260 Remington.

Thanks for the info. What length is your barrel?

James,

My .260 barrel length is 22 inches.  With the Speer Nitrex 140 grain factory loads, I am getting 2,725 fps.  The 100 grain Noslers clock out at 3,250.  I could  probably get higher velocities, but the accuracy is great, and I am happy with the velocity as is.  If I could do it over, I would have gotten a 24 inch barrel.  The slightly longer length just seems to balance better for me.  The barrel is a Virgin Valley custom.
