Weighing 777 powder charges??
« on: April 06, 2004, 08:02:31 AM »
I understand that a black power/pyrodex/777 is measured in grains in  volume, but once I found a sweet load, wouldn't it be the most consistent to measure that load on a scale, just as wolf hound did on the post below, and then load that exact ?weight grains each time?

Please advise,

Smoky

I do that myself. I actually started doing it while I was reloading my 45-70 with black powder. You will end up with a more consistent weight. Although black power/pyrodex/777 is more forgiving than smokeless.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with weighed charges. However always weigh a thrown charge to determine the weight of that charge then just duplicate that weight. For example a 100 gr. by volume of 777 is roughly equivelent to 80 gr. by weight. Never just weigh out a charge of powder strictly by weight. When you weigh out powder, it is always the weight of a thrown charge. And since 777 is hotter per gr. than black powder or Pyrodex, you can probably get more variation in thrown charges with it than Pyrodex or Black powder. I just started doing that myself, but it makes sense to me.
