cutting back a contender barrel
« on: March 11, 2004, 02:22:10 PM »
I keep seeing people selling contender barrels cut back shorter then 10 inches.
I like the looks of the short barrels. but don't have the heart to have one of my barrels cut back.
I was thinking about getting an old "knock around barrel" in 22 LR of 357 magnum. and having it cut back to about 6 inches,  re crowned and then refinish it.
does anyone have a shorty barreled contender or have shot one? I would love to know all about it.

I've got a 6 inch 38 special barrel from SSK and it is a blast to shoot.  It is stainless and came this way, not cut down.  I like it.

I have cut down several barrels but the only one less than 10" is a 357mag.  I cut it down to 8". Any shorter than that just doesn't look right to me.  KN

I used to own a 8" 375 Winchester barrel made by SSK.  I only kept it for a while.   :)
The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is recoil.

what is the recoil and muzzle blast like with the bigger rounds?
how is the accuracy with them do you guys have scope or iron sights?

Looking at my 10 inch 45/410  I can cut it back to 6 1/4 inches and still use the factory forend so if I can get a beater barrel at a good price I may cut it back to 6 1/2 . I doubt that this would make a good big game hunting barrel but may be good for rabbit and tree rats or even a handy back up gun

I was going to cut back one of my 10" 22lr match barrels to make something lighter for off hand shooting - trying to find someone that is competent locally seemed to be a little difficult so I just gave up on the idea for now!

just send it to ssk ( http://www.sskindustries.com/ ) , that is what I am thinking about doing.  it is only $50 to shorten and re-crown a contender barrel + shipping so it should run about $60 or so ( a guess) and You would pay around this for a local gunsmith to do it and you know you will be getting top notch work from ssk.

Thanks for the SSK info - if I decide to shorten one of my barrels I will surely consider sending it to SSK. I knew they produced complete barrels but did not know they offered custom work to existing barrels.

For a non rifle caliber, 6-8" is great! It makes it look like a handgun instead of a 'wrist rifle'. I recommend Virgin Valley for cutting barrels or supplying short barrels.

My first is a custom barrel I had made a 22 lr I hade cut to 6.5 just becouse I liked the way they(the shorter barrels looked) I need to get a higher front sight for it when I get the chance. The other barrel is a TCA custom barrel in 32 H&R Magnum that I got from Eds Contenders I love the short barreled 32 and I use all 3 32 calibers in it(32 S&W, 32 long, 32 magnum) I like the short barrels in regular calibers. I would like more barrels in 9mm,38 spec, & 45 acp. But thats just me.

Several years ago I stopped by JD's (SSK) on the way home from deer hunting in W Va. and looked over his, "Stub & Reject" barrel list. The most insane barrel was an 8 inch 375JDJ!!!!!!!!!  If your an HHI member, JD offers the "Stubs &  Rejects" at discounted prices.
