H&R M1 Garand
« on: March 30, 2004, 11:06:47 AM »
How many of you would give $550 for a Garand in good condition manufactured by H&R?  Our local gunshop is going out of business (Owner has health problems) and he has one on the shelf that is about that after the discount.  I've been wanting one for a while now but I really have no use for it from a practical standpoint.  Doesn't stop me from wanting it tho  :?.
I decided to give up on getting reliable service from my reconditioned Chrony and am going to drop some of my tax refund on a higher end chronograph.  This doesn't rule out buying the Garand but makes it a lot harder to justify in my little mind.  I think I might start a local GAA (Gun Addicts Anonymous) chapter to help me with my addiction.

It dosen't matter much who manufactured it, $550.00 for a Garand in good condition is a good price in this neck of the woods...Just a thought, How much are they through DCM nowadays? I thought they had some available recently....<><....

I think they start at $400 and go up from there.

My favorite gun shop has 3 of them...the cheapest...unreconditioned at $799.00 and the others about $850.00 so I would say that would be a good deal.

Sounds like an excellent price.  I did the DCM program years ago when they were only like $160 or so.

Just as a side note:  Recently attended a large antigue arms show (Timonium, MD).  I saw several dealers selling some of the rarer Garand stocks for up to $1,000 just for the wood!

I think what I'm going to do is go over to his shop on the last business day (this coming Saturday) and IF it's still there I might have to give him one less thing to pack up when the day is done.  I won't know till I get there but gimme a couple minutes to bond with it and I'll probably be filling out the adoption paperwork.

I got an M1 Garand (winchester) in the early 80's through DCM for $120, I used to really enjoy Hi-power competition until a lot of the guys got too serious and took the fun out of it.  I really enjoy shooting it and if you can hit targets at 200 yards with the peep sight, a scoped deer rifle seem like a piece of cake.  It's good practice. The DCM is a great program but I don't know the current price.  Good Luck.

Well someone helped me out and bought it a couple hours after I felt it up on Monday.

Deadeye, I have the lowest, cheapest, bottom of the bucket model they offer.  In fact, it's actually a "factory reconditioned" bottom of the bucket model.  Cost me $49 at Midway.  It's very sensative to light conditions.  I shot 9 test loads over it this past weekend and it didn't even bother giving me error messages.  It didn't react at all.  30 minutes later it seemed to work fine for a friend of mine.  Maybe it doesn't like me.  :?

Haywire, sorry to hear about your experience with your "remac" Chrony!
I bought my F-1 NEW about 3-4 years ago, and it works great! From paintball to shotgun slug......(the wad from my Lyman cast slug even took out the display window!!!! ), but it's still going fine....I did need to buy a spare set of screens after a while.....

I have a korean re-import Garand being rebarreled now. I am getting a heavy match grade 308  barrel ,  a fajen laminated stock , and a trigger job. I looked at the receipt date for the stock, it was 1997. I have been planning this one. A retired USMC gunny is doing the work , should be back in May.   :-)
