Any experience with the Benelli R-1?
« on: December 30, 2003, 11:48:07 AM »
I was in the local gun shop killing some time (dangerous) and the owner shoed me the Benelli R-1.  I admit it is funky looking, but I was drawn to it like a moth to the flame.  I have never owned a hunting auto loader, and was curious could share any comments on it's reliability and accuracy. Oh it was chambered in 30-06.

Sincerely,

:D
Like you, I was first drawn to the R1 by its ungainly appearance. Handled one, and for me, it sure does handle well. I got a Remington 7400 instead, as the Rem works well for me at 1/3 the price of the R1. However, I have since looked over and handled store R1s several more times, and the R1 workmanship, finish and handling qualities are superb, at least in my opinion. I particularly like the 20 inch carbine, and if they ever offer it with sights, I may have to spring for one. I am an offhand shooter and still hunter, and the R1 points like a wand for me. Interesting that something so ungainly looking is really so ergonomically sound. I am aware of an individual who recently purchased one and has had some reliability problems (failures to eject and feed). The R1 has been returned to Benelli for corrective action.

I would want one in 300 Win Mag, not 30-06.  For a semi-aiuto 30-06, you can have an M1 Garand for much less.  EAA is also promising to release Saigas and VEPRs in 30-06.

For 300 Win Mag, it's just the BAR and Benelli R1.  Not sure which I'd choose, but thBenelli loos nice.

There's an informative passage on the R1 posted on this forum Jan 22.
