360 DW in 357 mag barrel
« on: March 21, 2004, 01:43:20 PM »
For some time I've been considering having a 10 inch .357 Mag barrel rechambered to .357 max but, in collecting data for the project I ran across a case that Starline produces called the 360 Dan Wesson.  To my amazement Dan Wesson chambers their revolvers in this caliber.  After measuring and remeasuring the chamber in two of my .357 Mag barrels they measured the same 1.41 inches as the Starline was making the 360 in.
To make a long story short I ordered 100 cases from Mid Way loaded them with a mild charge of IMR 4227, small rifle primers, and 180 grain Rem JHP's.  I took everything to the range today and they shot superbly.  Accuracy was much better than before and the case fell out in my hand.
The next step is to increase the powder capacity to get max velocity and accuracy from the 10 inch barrel.
Of course, I will not get the velocity of the .357 Max but I should be able to beat the Speer #11 loading manuals contender velocity of 1579 FPS (180 gr bullet) by 100 FPS when I switch powders.  I believe the real benefit will be in accuracy.
Has anyone tried this?

I have been doing it for about a year now.My 357 mag barrel has such a long chamber that the Dan Wesson shoots great.

Dragon

I use a cast 180 gr fp.  I have a custom mold coming from over on cast boolits board.  It should be a 180 gr 6 cavity.  Will post results after I see how they shoot.

Where do you get the 360 DW brass
« Reply #9 on: April 06, 2004, 04:40:31 AM »
I have a 10" 357 Max barrel with a KBI muzzle break(came that way when I bought it at a gun show for $100) The 360 soulds like a good light load brass when I don't want to use the Max brass. that stuff is dear to come by so if I can get a quanity of 360 brass I can save my 357 max brass for serious bisness. thanks

357 Max brass is much more available than 360 DW brass is.  Just check with Midway or midsouth shooters and any of the folks who advertise here on GBO.  357 Max brass is definitely NOT in short supply at this time.

I agree,  .357 Max brass is not difficult to find.  I bought 1000 pieces about 5 years ago because every one was saying that it would be difficult to acquire.  I still have about 600 pieces of .357 Max brass, unfired and unprimed in a sealed container.  So far I've averaged 10 reloadings each for the 400 pieces that I have used and it seems as good as ever.  I only have 100 pieces of 360 to experiment with and so far I have been satisfied with the results.

My next question is can you use .445 DW brass in a .44 mag contender barrel without reaming the barrel out.  Who has tried it?  Let me know.
