Tarheel,
You're talking about a spring compressor and they can be bought at Pyramyd Air, Air Gun Express, Beeman and many other air gun suppliers. Just check around. Don't try working on a springer without one. Lawdog

Homemade Spring Compressor

Materials:
1ea 2x6 wood scrap piece about 2 ft long
6ea 3" #8 flat head wood screws
3ea 1-1/2" #8 pan head sheet metal screws
1ea 4" C-clamp
Fabrication time: 1 hour
Cost: about $3

place something soft between the rifle's action and the C-clamp bolt to avoid a scratch when compressing.
Maybe a rubber washer fixed with contact cement would works better.
