what to buy?

Looking for a nicer 1911 with adjustable sights. There are so many to chose from, I don't know which brands to consider. Maybe you all could recommend something.
Thanks

b. hall:  Kimber or Springfield are the first two that come to mind.  Mikey.

Like you mentioned, there's quite a selection out there. New ones range from $400 to $1650, more if you get a custom one built.  The nice thing about 1911's is you can modify them with tons of accessories and after market parts. If you start with a decent frame & slide, say a Springfield, you will probably spend about $600 or so. Later you can add the goodies if you want. As far as adjustable sights, Most of my 1911's have fixed sights. Once they are registered, no further adjustments are required. I shoot mostly 230 gr hardball but my point of impact @ 25 yds doesn't change more than an inch with 200 gr lead bullets or with 180 gr JHP's. At closer ranges it's barely noticeable. Adjustable sights get expensive, they don't hold up to combat shooting as well, and they get in the way if you draw from a holster. I just built a Les Baer gun with Bow-Mar adjustable sights. Wish I would have installed a Novak fixed sight. They are lower profile making the front sight much lower too. I get a great sight picture but the front sight is so tall it drags in the holster.

I second the previous post on not buying junk. I see a lot of guys at the range that are frustrated with their 1911s. Invariably these are low-grade guns, even the lower grades of Springfields.  Spend the $600+ to get a good one.

I recently picked up a Springfield in a trade.  It's a nice gun and would be a good way to go, but the Kimbers that I have handled always just felt and looked nicer than the Springfield does.  I have no basis for perfomance comparisons.

H'lo b.hall,
I've got three Colt 1911's. One, the Gold Cup, has adjustable sights.
Haven't seen any other brands that I like any better.

Just my opinion.

b.hall:  I've just read an article in Gun Tests where they compared 3 expensive 1911s, a Kimber, A Star Arms (Lone Star) and a Wilson.  Here's what they said -  Kimber LTP II ($2,036) - Don't Buy: they felt the test piece was not particularly reliable.  Lone Star Lawman Match ($1,595) - Don't Buy:  The gun's reliability factor was lacking.  Wilson CBQ ($1,895) - Conditional Buy, not totally reliable, did not shoot to poa, and needed 'a bit of smithin'.

I think you may be able to read the results yourself if you go to www.gun-tests.com   .  Hope this helps.  Mikey.

check this out.  i shoot a kimber; but must say i think the springers are well built.  i do remember seeing a thread on this board titled "customer service at springfield sucks".   you should check that out too.  hell of a decision you have there.
