Any one other than Cimmeron handle 51' conversions?
« on: February 23, 2004, 08:15:15 AM »
I'm interested in getting a pair of 51' Richard's Mason conversions in 38 spcecial, but every e-mail I've sent to Cimmeron has yet to be answered.

Anybody else out there handling them with better customer service?

Thanks,

Will

look up Traditionaleffects.com, it is in Texas and handles Cimarron, also responds.  They usually also have a booth at End of Trail, if you go there in April.

Howdy,

While all the gun companies have web sites and email addresses, they are old time businesses for the most part.  CALL THEM.  Pick up the phone before you decide they don't want your business.

That said, the 51s are tough to find right now.  There are a few in the country and Uberti hasn't shipped any in a while.  Good news (sort of) is that there are Opentops waiting to clear in customs, a good number.

Traditional Effects is a big dealer for Cimarron and your best bet, as Cimarron doesn't sell direct to consumers.  Both Cimarron and TE has been out of town a lot lately, shows and shoots.  Again, I suggest the phone.

Thanks Guys, I think after wieghing all the cost I'm going to order a set of plans from Anvil Enterprises.  They have a set of plans and blue prints for 19.95 and I've got a pair of navies, a 51 and a 61'.

I've always wanted to do this but thought I'd just buy one now that they are making them.  After looking at there site I think I'll try building my own.

I bought the Anvil plans and found them very lacking.  There are details missing and dimensions that don't add up, etc.  I built 2 51's using the Kirst 38 converter, you have to cut the loading port in the frame.  Everything works, and it will tolerate smokeless loads.  I shoot 38Special with 148 gr hollowbase wadcutters ant the guns are very accurate.  Youm must use hollowbase bullets so they will open up to the 375 bore from 357.  I have pictures if you send me your email address, as I haven't figured out how to post pictures here yet.

Howdy, this is my first post here.

I had purchased the last pair of Uberti  '51 .38 specials with 7.5" barrels that Traditional Effects had at the beginning of the year and had them at TE also do action jobs on the navies. They are pure pleasure to shoot and have a couple of CAS matches using them with blackpowder loads.
I did the same thing a couple years ago with the Anvil plans and pretty much wrecked a new '51 Uberti Navy and recently ordered a Kirst Convertor for another Navy, but still have the Navy that I used with the Anvil plans. Actually I had good luck with reading and following Anvil's plans, tilll I broke the main Arbor pin and had to buy a replacement part, then made the back plate OK and able to fasten it to the frame as directed in the plans. then turned down the cylinder to accomodate the .38 Long Colt cases, so far so good, hammer got trimmed down to fit as needed with no problems, but apparently some were along the process I wore enough of the hammer cam that catches the bolt and won't drop far enough to let the cylinder release at half cock, so now have purchased more new parts, new hammer, new hand and still more parts like Wolfs main spring for lightened hammer and same with a bolt spring. It's kinda sad I have this many hours in the almost new gun, not counting the dollars I spent for parts and mics. proper size drill bits and end mill bits. However I don't blame Anvil for my mistakes and did learn a heck of a lot on how six guns really work. Forgot to mention the firning pin is to be completed and is ready for installation in the back plate ring. This gun project did get put on hold for almost 2 years due to moving to another state, but have recently gotten interested in it again. Have some pictures some where if I can find them. Thanks, ...now I feel better about wrecking a perfectly good  '51 Navy and still trying to make it shoot.

Well I got the 51' to shoot, and even profed it with smokless loads, but will probably make a new breach plate and it needs a new hand and spring, and I will purchase a new cylinder just to suit me as I did a rather sloppy job turning it down.  Right now the firing pin is silver brazed to the hammer and needs a little trimming as it pierces the primmers.  Still need to cut a loading gate in the frame and breach plate, and make the extracter.

I've got to say that the extracter looks a heck of a lot eaiser to make for the 51 than the 61, I've got a 61 short barreld navy with a Kirst that I'm trying to figure out a way to atach the extracter that looks period.

Also I'm now thinking with the price of solid vs. hollow base ammo of relining the barrel to 357.  I can get a barrel linner for about 10$.  Though I may just get into casting to produce the hollow base ammo.  in any case that'll be down the road a ways

One thing about converting a cap n' ball, it's about as authintic as you can get.

Will, sounds like your having some luck with the Anvil plans.

Just this morning I received the Kirst convertor and installed it on a Navy C&B  just to see how it worked and fucntions fine with no shots fired yet.

Also put the Kirst convertor on my Anvil project gun,but not had time to mess with it much. it's a neat setup.

I'm not planning on making the ejector rod and gonna use a cut off church key to eject the empties after opening the loading  port in the frame. On the firing pin, I thought I found the perfect solution. The measurements of a Lee decapping pin are real close and broke a couple decappning pins on the final fab stage, but still think it will work if 'm more patient. Still wondering about a gas ring on the main base pin to help reduce fouling, but that's down the road.

Do want to hear more about what it takes to do the .357 relining?

Good luck on your project and keep us informed.

Actualy I started this project before getting the anvil plans, just did a lot of figuring.  Even with the Anvil plans you have to do a lot of measuring, but they give you the idea, and will be a big help on the loading gate cover and ejector.

I would love to here what it takes to do the barrel relining.  I know I can do the machine work, but not sure how to go about brazing the linner in.  I've got a torch and gas forge and don't know if you just braze the ends of the linner or if it's posible to braze the entire length of linner and barrel.

Thanks,

Will
