Tang Sights-What's the Story?

Since the 44 mag is not a long range cartridge a scope is not really necessary. I own rifles with both frame and bolt mounted peep sights as well as tang sights. In my estimation tang sights are better suited for target shooting at the range, while peep sights are made for hunting. You should try each and make your own decision.

Hay Advocate:  I have the Lyman Tang Sight on my Winchester 444 and I love it.  It gives a great sight picture and combined with a blade front sight with white stripe, gives excellent accuracy.

That sort of a peep sight is great for hunting - it gives you a full view of your target, not one blocked by more than half with a buckhorn or other type of barrel mounted sight.

I disagree that the sight should not be used on heavy kicking or heavy recoil guns.  The 444 is no pussycat in that department, and many fellas mount those things to their 45 and 70s or other heavy caliber lever actions without problem.  

One thing you will notice with the tang mounted sight is that your shooting hand and your face is further behind the sight than without it.  I really choke up on my old 30-30 saddle ring carbine, and I like it that way.  But, because the Lyman is mounted on the tang on my 444, my grip is slightly different and my face is slightly further back than it would be if using a barrel mounted sight.

Some fellers complain that the Lyman does not have a 'click' adjustable elevation gradient, just the screw adjustment.  I think someone out there makes a 'click' adjustable rear tang sight but for the life of me I couldn't tell  you who.  Maybe some of the others would know.

I first started looking at the peep sights but I think you need to drill a hole on the Winchesters for them.  I am now considering an Ashley Ghost Ring Sight that mounts on the receiver.  This setup looks better to me.

Try the Marbles Tang sight,as it is adjustable for windage as well.It is available at Brownells and they have them for many different rifles.As for not using a tang sight on a rifle with heavy recoil, don't tell that to the BPCR guys who use tang sights on their 45-110 sharps and rolling blocks.
